Restoration Arriving2 Corinthians 1:4

Tuesdays in the Waiting Room

This message is for to recognize the Tuesdays you sit with strangers in a waiting room as restoration arriving, when the nursing career the illness took is the only version you will call real

The badge is laminated and it says VOLUNTEER in a font she has privately hated for two years. It hangs off a lanyard, and the lanyard is the color they give to people who are not staff, and everybody in the building can read that color from twenty feet away, including her.

Tuesday mornings she pushes the coffee cart along the row of chairs by the tall windows, where the light comes in low and yellow before the sun gets over the parking structure. Decaf on the left. The little tubs of creamer that nobody can open. A stack of the small napkins. She knows which chairs the families take when the news is going to be long, and which ones people sit in when they have not admitted to themselves yet that it is going to be long.

She was a nurse for nineteen years. That is not how she says it out loud, because saying it out loud invites the follow-up question and the follow-up question has a whole illness in it. She says she used to work in the hospital. Nineteen years of twelve-hour shifts, drug calculations in her head faster than the machine, the particular calm that came down over her when a room went bad, which she has never been able to explain to anybody who was not in the room. She was good. She was not just good, she was the one they put with the difficult families, which is the highest thing anybody in that building ever said about anybody.

Then the illness, and the year of it, and the slow arithmetic of what her body would and would not do anymore, and the meeting where everyone was kind. She has a drawer at home with two pairs of scrubs in it, folded, that she has not thrown out and does not wear and cannot look at for long.

So: the cart. The badge. The napkins. She is good at this too. She knows how to sit down next to somebody without making it an event, how to be quiet in a way that is company rather than pressure, when to say a true thing and when to say nothing and hand over a napkin. She is, in fact, the best they have. And on the bad Tuesdays it feels like being handed a paper crown after losing a kingdom.

Then a man in the third chair, whose wife had gone in at six, asked her how she knew what to say. He was not making conversation. He asked it the way people ask when they are trying to work something out.

And she said, without deciding to say it: because I have been on the other side of that door.

She thought about that sentence in the car. She has thought about it every Tuesday since, and she still calls the cart the cart, and she still calls nursing the real thing.

You are doing this too. You have a Tuesday, or a phone call you take, or a chair you sit in, or a thing you are quietly extraordinary at now, and you file it under consolation because it does not have the shape of what you lost. You are looking at something real, and it is not a paper crown. 2 Corinthians 1:4 says the comfort you were given is the comfort you have to give, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been putting people in the third chair on Tuesday mornings.

What actually travels out of an affliction

Read this verse slowly, and watch what it says moves and what it says does not.

who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.2 Corinthians 1:4

Notice what Paul does not say. He does not say the affliction was worth it. He does not say God arranged the affliction in order to produce the ministry, and he does not tell anybody to be grateful for the thing that hurt them. He is very careful, and people quoting him are usually not.

What he says is that God comforted him, and that the comfort is the thing that travels. Not the affliction. The comfort. It comes down out of God into a person in trouble, and then it comes out of that person into the next one, and it is the same substance the whole way through. That is why the sentence circles back on itself the way it does: with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted.

Which means the thing you carry into that waiting room on a Tuesday did not come from the illness. It came from God, in the middle of the illness, while you were lying there. The illness took. God gave. Those are two different transactions and they happened in the same room, and almost everybody who tries to comfort you collapses them into one and hands you a sentence about everything happening for a reason.

You have something in your hands that God put there and no illness manufactured. It is written in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that the comfort is passed on in the same form it was received, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying it through you into the third chair without asking your permission first.

Restored is not the same word as replaced

Now let me say the thing this site exists to say, and then let me say what it does not mean.

Restored is not replaced. Replaced would mean a new career arrives with the same weight and the same shifts and the same calm coming down over you in a bad room, and it does not, and I am not going to dress up a Tuesday as a hospital. Restored means God puts back into a person what was taken out of them. Not the position. The woman who held it.

And now the part I want to be very exact about, because this category gets misused. I am not telling you this is better. It is not better, it is not a promotion, it is not what you would have chosen, and I am not going to rank two things for you when one of them is a wound. The drawer with the scrubs in it stays shut for as long as it needs to stay shut, and the grief in that drawer is not closed by anything in this article and does not have to be.

Here is all I am saying, and it is enough to change a Tuesday. What God is handing you is real, and real does not require matching. You have been holding out for restoration in the shape of the loss, which means everything He has actually put in your hands goes into the drawer next to the scrubs, unopened and uncounted. You are permitted to receive something that does not match and to still call it His. Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that what you were given is exactly what you now have to give, and the same Spirit who comforted you on the worst night of that year is the one handing it forward on Tuesday mornings.

And your anger about the meeting where everyone was kind is not on trial here. Nineteen years were taken. Anger is the correct response to a thing being taken, and nobody on this page is going to talk you out of it in order to make the rest of the article go down easier.

The breakthrough

So here is what happens now, and it is not that anybody gives you the nineteen years.

You are going to take one thing that is already in your week and change what you file it under. Not add anything. Not volunteer for more. Not make yourself useful enough to have earned the right to feel restored, because that is a trap and this site does not set it. One thing that is already there: the cart, the third chair, the phone call you take, the neighbor you check on, the sentence you knew how to say because you have been on the other side of that door.

Say it out loud, and say it in the form of restoration and not consolation. And when the word only tries to get into the sentence, take it back out, because only is the word this whole misfiling is built on. You are holding what God restored, and it does not become less real for arriving in a shape you did not order. It is written in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that the comfort came from God and travels through you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the traveling, on a Tuesday, in a room with tall windows.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, out loud, in whatever room you are in. You are in Christ, and the standing to say what is true over your own week was given to you by Him and was never earned by a job title, so none of this depends on your being impressive again. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it. And leave the outcome to Him: His timing is His own, nothing here promises you the career back, nothing here ranks one life against the other, and what happens next belongs to Him and is not being settled by me.

  1. Drawer with the scrubs in it, you do not get to decide what is real. It is written in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that the comfort I was given is the comfort I have to give, so the Tuesdays are not a consolation and I am done filing them as one.
  2. Fear that I am a paper crown, you have no right to stay in this waiting room. Restored is not replaced and I am not asking for a copy of the nineteen years; in the name of Jesus I am receiving what God is actually handing me, and Scripture is what I am standing on.
  3. Father, You comforted me on the worst nights of that year and You are the one who put what I carry into my hands. I thank You that Your word says the comfort I received is the comfort I have to give, and that Your Spirit is the one carrying it into the third chair. Today I am naming the Tuesday out loud as restoration, without the word only in it, and leaving the rest with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
