Restoration ArrivingLuke 24:31

Thursday, and One Old Woman

This message is for to recognize one old woman praying with you on Thursdays as restoration arriving, when the community that fell apart is the only shape of belonging you count

There were about two hundred of them, and it took eighteen months to come apart.

Not in one night. That is the part nobody outside understands. It went slowly, the way a shoreline goes: a disagreement, then two disagreements, then people sitting in different rows, then a Sunday where four families were not there and nobody said why, then a season where the person who used to save her a seat stopped coming and never answered the message asking whether she was all right. Then it was thirty people in a room built for three hundred. Then it was the doors.

What she lost was not a building. She could have taken the building falling down. What she lost was a shape. Sunday lunch for twelve with the leaf in the table and somebody always bringing a wrong dessert. Wednesday nights with the folding chairs. Forty adults who knew her children's names without being told, and knew which one had the tonsils out, and asked about it afterward. Being one of many. Being in the middle of something.

That was four years ago and she does not go to church now, and she has stopped explaining why to people who ask.

On Thursday afternoons she drives across town to Ida's.

Ida is eighty-eight and does not drive anymore, and she was never in the middle of anything at that church, just on the edge of it, third row from the back, the kind of person you knew the name of and nothing else. There is a lamp in her front room with a fringed shade that has been there since before either of them was born, and there are two mugs, and there is always a plate with exactly two cookies on it, and Ida is offended if you bring your own.

They talk for an hour. Then Ida says, well, shall we, and they pray for about fifteen minutes, out loud, taking turns, for Ida's neighbor with the hip and for her own son who is not speaking to her and for the man on the corner who sits outside. Then she washes both mugs and drives home.

She has been doing this for two years and she has never once counted it.

In her head it is filed under a kindness she does for an old woman. If somebody at work asks whether she has found a church, she says no. If somebody from the old days asks whether she has anybody, she says not really. Two years of Thursdays, a lamp, two mugs, fifteen minutes of praying out loud with another human being, and the honest answer she gives out loud is not really.

Because she is still counting in two hundreds. Belonging has one shape in her head and it seats twelve at a table with a leaf in it, and anything smaller than that reads as a stopgap. A thing you do until the real thing comes back.

You are counting in some number too. You know exactly what it is. It is the size of the department before the layoffs, or the family before the falling out, or the Sunday it used to be. And there is something already in your week, something small and warm and completely uncounted, that you have been filing under a kindness or a stopgap or not really. You are already inside something God is doing, and it has been going on longer than you have been noticing it. That is not a nice thought to open with; it is written in Luke 24 that the risen Lord walked seven miles with two people whose eyes were kept from recognizing Him, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the opening of eyes, which means the not seeing was never a failure of yours to correct.

Seven miles and they did not know

The two on the road to Emmaus were not stupid and they were not faithless. Read the chapter and you will find neither one of those.

They were grieving. What they had lost was not a building either; it was a shape. They had a picture of how the restoring of Israel was going to look, and it was large, and it was public, and it had a throne in it. And what they got, that afternoon, on a road, was a stranger walking beside them asking questions.

Luke says something about that walk that ought to change how you read your own week. He says their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. Kept. Not failed. It was not that they were not looking hard enough, or that a more spiritual pair would have known. The text lays the not seeing somewhere other than on them, and then it lays the seeing somewhere other than on them too:

And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.Luke 24:31

Look at where it happens. Not on the road, where He explained the Scriptures to them for seven miles. At a table. In a house they had asked Him into because it was getting late. Bread broken by somebody who was not the host, in a room with three people in it and no crowd anywhere.

You are sitting at the small table where recognition actually happens, and it is already the room it is going to happen in. Luke 24:31 puts the opening of the eyes at a table and not in a throng, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that opening, which means what is required of you here is attendance and not insight.

What I am not going to tell you

Now the thing I am not going to do, because it is done to grieving people constantly and it is a trick, and you would feel it even if you could not name it.

I am not going to tell you that the small thing is better. Nobody gets to say that to you. Two mugs is not two hundred people, and a fringed lamp is not a room full of folding chairs, and one old woman on a Thursday is not forty adults who knew your children's names. I am not going to dress the loss up as a hidden gift and I am not going to arrange the sentence so that you end up grateful the church came apart. It came apart. It should not have. You are allowed to want the leaf in the table and the wrong dessert, and this page does not close that, today or at the end.

And here is the other half, and it is the whole reason this is worth reading. Restored is not the same word as replaced. Replaced would mean a copy, a substitute two hundred issued to make the numbers up, something arranged to fill the shape that went. That is not what is happening in Ida's front room and it was never on offer. Restored means God Himself, arriving, at a scale you did not order, doing real work on the actual person you are now.

A consolation prize is what you are handed at the door on your way out of something. Thursday is not that. Thursday is the Lord, at a table, in a house, which is the only place in Luke 24 anybody recognized Him at all. You have something real in your week and it is not a substitute for anything. That is written into the shape of Luke 24:31 itself, a table and not a throng, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping that appointment with you for two years while you filed it under something else.

The breakthrough

So the turn here is not that anything new arrives. It is that you stop miscounting what has.

There is something in your week you have been calling by the wrong name. A Thursday. A phone call every other Sunday. A neighbor. A group of three. A person who checks on you and whom you have been thinking of as somebody you are being kind to. You have been filing it under stopgap, because your definition of belonging has two hundred people in it and this has two.

Name it correctly. Out loud, using the actual word. Say: this is restoration, and it is arriving. Not this will do for now. Not it is better than nothing. The word.

You are already holding what you have been waiting for the arrival of, and it does not become real by being counted, it becomes visible. Luke 24:31 is the written ground for that, eyes opened onto what had been walking beside them for seven miles already, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that work in a person, which is why the whole of your part here is to say one true sentence out loud.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where the lamp is, or in the car on the way home. The authority to say them is not yours by nature and it is not earned by how well you have coped with any of it. It belongs to you because you are in Christ, and it is His. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. What He does about the two hundred, and about the shape of anything ahead, is His to decide, and nothing here predicts it or asks for it.

  1. Thursday afternoon in a front room, you are not a stopgap and I am not calling you one anymore. It is written in Luke 24:31 that eyes were opened at a table and not in a crowd, and the Lord who sat down at that table is the one in this room with the two mugs.
  2. Voice that calls Thursday a consolation, you do not get to name what God is doing in this house. Restored is not replaced and nobody is handing me back two hundred people, and it is written that their eyes were opened over broken bread in a small room, so in the name of Jesus I say that what is arriving is real and I am receiving it.
  3. Father, the two hundred are still scattered and I am not pretending otherwise, and You are in a front room with a lamp and a plate of two cookies. Your word in Luke 24:31 is the ground I am standing on, and Your Spirit is the one who opens eyes that were kept. I am naming Thursday out loud today as something You are giving, and not as something I am making do with.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
