Restoration ArrivingJohn 21:9

The Neighbor Who Knew the Dish

This message is for to recognize the neighbor teaching you your mother's dish as restoration arriving, when what you wanted back was the handwriting on the recipe cards that burned

The landing between the two doors is four feet wide and it always smells of somebody else's cooking, which is the whole of apartment living in one sentence.

The fire started in the wiring behind the kitchen wall on a Thursday in November. Nobody was hurt. Everybody says that first, and everybody is right, and she has learned to say thank you and mean it while a small door closes somewhere behind her eyes, because the next thing people say is that things can be replaced.

The box could not. It was a shoe box with the lid gone soft at the corners, and in it were her mother's cards, maybe sixty of them, some on index cards and some on the backs of envelopes and one on the cardboard from a packet of tea. Her mother wrote in a slanted, hurrying hand with the letters running together, and she never wrote quantities, only things like until it smells right and not too much and the small pot, not the big one. There was a splash on the card for the rice dish that had been there since before she was born. She used to be able to tell which cards had been used most by how the grease had gone through the paper.

Ash. Not even ash you could identify. The insurance man was decent about the sofa.

For eleven months she has been trying to rebuild the rice dish from the inside of her own head. She has made it nine times. It has been wrong nine times, and wrong in a way she cannot name, which is the maddening part, because if she could name it she could fix it. Her son says it is good. Her son is being kind and she can hear the kindness in it and it makes her want to put her head down on the counter.

Then, in October, the woman from the door opposite. Eighty-one, four foot eleven, keeps her own landing swept and everybody else's too. She knocked at seven in the evening with a pot in both hands and a folded cloth over the lid and said, in the flat way of somebody who has decided something and is not taking questions: I knew your mother forty years. Come. I will show you.

And there they were, the two of them, on a four-foot landing, with the lid off and the steam going up past the light fitting, and the old woman was saying, no, no, you put the onions in far too late, she always started them cold, like this, watch.

It was right. That was the terrible part. It was right in the way nine attempts had not been, and it was arriving out of somebody else's hands, and the handwriting was still gone and always would be, and the woman standing on the landing did not know whether what she felt was gratitude or grief or whether there is a word for both of them at once.

You know that landing. You are standing in front of something real that arrived in a shape you did not order, and John 21:9 says the fire was already lit and the bread was already on it before anybody on that boat had thought to ask for breakfast, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is teaching you to recognize what has already been set down in front of you. Stay with me. Nobody here is going to tell you the pot is better than the box.

He lit the fire before they got to shore

Look at what is on the beach when the boat comes in, and look at what is not.

As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.John 21:9

Seven of them had been out all night. Peter had gone back to fishing, which tells you everything about the state of the man, and they had caught nothing until a voice from the shore told them which side to try. Then John says it is the Lord, and Peter goes into the water, and they drag the net up the shingle, and there it is already: coals lit, fish on, bread beside it. Somebody had been up before them, and had built a fire, and had put breakfast on it, on a beach, in the half dark.

Now hold on to that phrase, a fire of coals, because it appears exactly one other time in this Gospel. It is the fire in the courtyard of the high priest, the one the servants and officers had made because it was cold, and Peter stood at it and warmed his hands and said, three times, that he did not know the man.

So the risen Christ restores Peter over a charcoal fire. He does not erase the courtyard. He does not rewind the night and hand it back unspent. He does not offer Peter a version of events in which the denial did not happen, and He never once tells him that what is coming will be better than what he threw away. He lights a fire of the same kind, and cooks, and says come and dine, and asks him three questions, and gives him a job.

That is what restoration looks like when it actually arrives. It has the shape of the wound in it, and it does not pretend the wound away, and it comes from outside, already lit, cooked by somebody else's hands.

You are being handed something that was prepared before you asked for it, because John 21:9 has the coals burning while the boat is still on the water, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lit it and the one who is walking you up the beach toward it.

What arrived is real, and it is not the same thing

Now let me say the honest half, because this category is where a message goes wrong by trying to be nice.

The cards are gone. The handwriting is gone. The splash on the card for the rice dish, the loops running into each other, until it smells right, all of that is ash and it is not coming back, and nobody who tells you otherwise is doing you a kindness. Restored is not a word that means replaced. It never has been. If restoration meant a copy handed back, then Peter would have got a Thursday night in a courtyard returned to him clean, and he did not, and no page in the Book pretends he did.

And I am not going to tell you that the woman across the landing is better than your mother, or that the pot is an upgrade on the box, or that God took one to give you the other. Do not let anybody hand you that sentence. It is not in Scripture and it is a cruelty dressed as comfort. Your grief over the handwriting is not a failure to appreciate what came. It is what love does when the thing it attached itself to is gone.

Here is what is true at the same time, and both of these get to stand. An eighty-one year old woman who knew your mother for forty years is on your landing with a pot in her hands, telling you the onions go in cold. That is not a consolation prize. That is not the runner-up. That is bread already on the fire, put there by somebody who was awake before you, and the only question in front of you is whether you will come up the beach and eat it while it is hot.

You have real restoration standing on your landing, and His word never once asked you to stop grieving the thing that burned before you were allowed to receive it, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding both of those open in you at once.

The breakthrough

So the moment is here, and it is not on the far side of the handwriting coming back, and it is not on the far side of feeling entirely fine about the pot either.

You are being restored right now, in a stairwell, by a woman who knew your mother, and it is written that He had the fish laid on and the bread ready before the net came out of the water, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put her hands on that lid tonight. Restoration does not always knock the way you rehearsed. On that beach it came as breakfast. On your floor it came as onions started cold.

And what God does about the rest of it is His. I am not forecasting a shape or a schedule. He restores the person first, always, and whatever else He does is His to decide and not mine to promise. What is in front of you is not a promise about tomorrow. It is a pot on a landing tonight, and it is real, and it is His, and it is enough to eat.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the landing if that is where you are standing. The standing to say them was given to you when Christ took you as His own, and it is His authority you carry out onto four feet of stairwell, not yours. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them. The mountain here is the voice that calls what arrived a consolation prize and refuses to let you eat it. Speak to that. Then speak to God about the woman with the wrong rice dish, and His timing is His own, and what He does with the rest of this is His to decide and not mine to forecast.

  1. Box of cards that burned, you do not get to decide what reaches me now. John 21:9 says a fire of coals was already lit and the bread was already on it before anybody on that boat asked for breakfast, and a thing I did not order can still be a thing sent to me.
  2. Fear that taking this means letting her go, you are silenced in the name of Jesus. I can grieve the handwriting and receive the pot in the same evening, the written word shows a man fed on a beach with the courtyard still in his memory, and His Spirit is holding both of those open in me.
  3. Lord, You are the One who lit the fire before the net came in, and You are doing it again on my landing. I thank You, because Your word says the bread was ready before anybody asked and Your Spirit is the one who put her hands on that lid, and I am coming up the beach to eat what You cooked.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
