Leaving Before the Last Song

He always takes the end of the back row, the seat nearest the side door, and he is there early enough to get it.

Stone church, cold in the shins even in June, a radiator that ticks. He knows the ticking. He has learned the whole room the way you learn a room you are not sure of: where the light comes from, which board creaks, how long it takes to get from that seat to the door if he stands up now.

He can do about fifty minutes. He has never timed it deliberately and he knows the number exactly.

The trouble is always the last song. Everybody stands, and the sound comes up, and people start moving in the aisles because it is nearly over and the moving starts early, and somebody two rows ahead turns around to say something warm to somebody else, and the whole room becomes a thing with a lot of hands in it. And his chest goes tight and his hearing goes strange, that flat underwater feeling, and there is a hot pressure behind his eyes that has nothing to do with crying.

So he goes. Out the side door on the second verse, across the gravel, and he stands with both hands flat on the roof of his car in the parking lot and breathes until the sky comes back down to the right height.

Two years of that. Two years of coming back, most weeks, to a building, after what happened at the other one. He is not going to tell you the details and I am not going to invent them for him. What was taken from him is easy enough to name without them: he used to be a man who could sit anywhere in a room full of people and stay to the end of anything and never once think about a door.

And the thing he cannot get past, standing in the gravel with his hands on the roof of the car, is that he had a private timetable and he has blown right through it. A year, he thought. Definitely by a year. Then he thought eighteen months. He is at two years and four months and he still cannot make it to the last song, and the sentence that arrives in the parking lot every single week, in his own voice, is: this is not working.

You have your own last song. Maybe it is a building, maybe it is a phone call you still cannot make, maybe it is a room in your own family, maybe it is that you can now drive past the place but not stop. And you had a timetable too, and it was private, and you have blown through it, and you are standing somewhere with your hands on something cold telling yourself this is not working. You are inside something that is working at a speed you were never given the equipment to measure. That is not a comfort I am improvising; it is written in 1 Kings 19:7 that God fed an exhausted man twice and told him plainly the journey was too great, without one syllable of blame in it, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been the strength in the fifty minutes you can do while you were busy counting the ten you cannot.

What God did first, before He said anything

Elijah had just come off the biggest day of his working life. Fire on the mountain, the whole nation watching, the thing everybody remembers him for. And a day later he is a hundred miles south under a broom tree in the desert asking God to let him die.

Read what God does about that, in order, because the order is the entire teaching.

He does not correct him. There is no lecture about the fire he just called down or the faith he ought to have. An angel touches him, and there is bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water by his head, and he eats and drinks and lies down and goes back to sleep. That is God's first move on a man in that state: touch, food, sleep.

Then the angel comes back.

And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you."1 Kings 19:7

A second time. Hold onto that. The first feeding was not enough, and God does not treat the not enough as a failure, He simply comes again. Nobody says you have already been fed once. Nobody asks him why the bread has not taken effect yet. He gets touched again, and fed again, and only then does anything else happen.

And look at the sentence. The journey is too great for you. God says that about him, out loud, as a plain fact He is working with rather than a shortcoming He is pointing out. He is not saying try harder. He is saying this is more than you can currently do, so eat.

You are being fed for a journey God has already measured and called too great, and He said that about it Himself. It is written in 1 Kings 19:7 exactly that way, the touch first and the food second and the journey afterward, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the strengthening in a person between one Sunday and the next, at a rate nobody has ever been able to feel happening.

Slow is not stalled

Now the honest part, and I am not going to dress it up.

Nothing here promises you speed. There is no acceleration on offer on this page, no key that unsticks it, no step you have been missing that would have had you staying to the end by now. Two years might be four. I am not going to tell you it will not be, because I do not know, and neither does anybody who has told you otherwise.

And there is nothing you could have done to make it go faster. That matters more than the rest of this paragraph, so read it twice. You did not slow this down by not trying hard enough, by not praying about it correctly, by sitting at the back, by leaving early. The nervous system you are walking around in learned something real in a place where something real happened, and it is unlearning it at the speed such things unlearn, which is not a speed anybody gets to set.

Here is what is actually true. Restored is not the same word as replaced. Nobody is handing you back the man who could sit in the middle of a row and stay to the end without thinking about a door. There is no swap, no substitute, no version of you issued to make the difference up. Restored is what is happening to the man who currently sits at the end of the back row, and it is being done on him, at this speed, in this seat.

And here is the part the enemy of your soul works hardest to keep off the table: you cannot detect it. Elijah was not asked to notice the strengthening. He was asked to eat. He did not lie under that tree taking readings on his own recovery; he ate twice and slept and then walked, and he found out afterward what the bread had been worth. You have no obligation whatsoever to be able to feel this working. That is the order Scripture puts it in, food first and forty days afterward, in 1 Kings 19, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the actual carrying, which is why noticing nothing in a given week is not evidence about anything at all.
