The booth only holds five comfortably, so somebody drags a chair to the end every week, and it has been his chair for four of the eleven years.
Tuesday night, the diner off the highway, the one with the laminated menus and the pie case that has been half empty since anybody can remember. Same waitress. She stopped asking what they want in about year two. Coffee comes, the pot stays, and the six of them talk until she starts wiping tables near them in a way that means something.
He could tell you what each of them carries. The tall one whose boy is not speaking to him. The quiet one who has buried both parents in three years and says almost nothing and comes every week. The loud one who talks over everybody and once drove ninety minutes at two in the morning because another man at this table called him. Five men. He knows their kids' names. He knows which ones need somebody to say grace out loud because they will not do it themselves.
And here is what he has never said in that booth: he thinks of this as the waiting room.
Eleven years since she left. He does not tell that story with a case in it, and he will not now. What he has is a house with the good furniture on one side, and a Tuesday, and a stubborn, unbudging, eleven year old certainty that his real life is somewhere ahead of him and has not started, and that what he does on Tuesdays is pass the time until restoration shows up wearing a wedding ring.
So he sits in the dragged chair at the end of the table and he loves these men, genuinely, and he counts them as nothing. Not out of coldness. Out of a category error he has never once examined. Five men at a diner is not restoration, it is what you do while you wait for restoration.
He would be embarrassed to say that out loud with them sitting there. Which is usually a sign a man knows something is wrong with the sentence.
You have a Tuesday. Maybe it is a table, maybe it is a phone that rings on Sunday afternoons from the same number, maybe it is a neighbor who shovels your walk and will not let you thank him properly, maybe it is a job you call temporary in the fourth year of doing it. And somewhere in you is a category marked real life, and none of that has been allowed into it. You are being given something in this time, and it does not stop being a gift because it arrived in a shape you did not order. It is written in Mark 10:30 that what comes back comes now, in this time, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping a chair dragged to the end of a table for you every week of the eleven years you have called a waiting room.
Read what is on the list
Peter had just said the thing you would have said. We have left everything to follow you. And Jesus answered him, and I want you to look at the answer with your eyes open, because this verse gets quoted at people loosely and loose is where the damage gets in.
who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.Mark 10:30
Three things in that sentence, and every one of them matters to a man at a diner on a Tuesday.
First: now, in this time. Not later, not the age to come, that is the separate clause at the end. There is a category called now and Jesus put things in it.
Second: read the list. Houses. Brothers. Sisters. Mothers. Children. Lands. Those are people and places, and they are ordinary, and they are the exact sort of thing a man would walk straight past on his way to look for the real gift. Brothers. It is on the list. Jesus said the word out loud and He put it under the verb receive.
Third, and this is the one nobody quotes: with persecutions. In the same breath. He is not selling anything. A man who was about to be crucified was not going to hand His friends a line about their best life. The list is real and the hardship rides along with it, and that is why you can trust the list.
You have brothers on a written list from the mouth of Jesus, and that is a different thing from having company. Mark 10:30 puts them under receiving and it puts receiving in this time, and it is the same Spirit who moved the man writing that Gospel down who has had you at that table for four years in a chair somebody drags over every week.
What that verse does not say
Now the honest half, and I am not going to skip it, because a page that skipped it would be worth nothing to you.
There is a word that is not on that list. Look again. Houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, lands. Jesus did not put a wife on the receiving list. Not in Mark and not anywhere else. He was not being cruel and He was not being coy. He simply did not promise the thing you have been waiting for, and neither will I, and anybody who does is guessing in a confident voice on a subject God kept quiet about.
So I am not telling you what is ahead. I do not know. What I am telling you is what is written, and what is written is a list, and there are five men on it sitting in a diner on a Tuesday night.
And here is the sentence this whole site is built on, so let me say it plain. Restored is not replaced. Five men at a diner are not a wife. Nobody is asking you to do the arithmetic where they come out even, because they do not come out even, and the day you tell yourself they do is the day you have started lying in order to feel better. The table is not an upgrade. The table is not compensation. The eleven years are still eleven years and the grief about them is not being closed here.
The table is a real thing that God is really giving, right now, while the other thing stays unresolved. Both. At once.
You are allowed to receive one thing without pretending it settles the other, and God is not asking you to trade your grief for your gratitude. Mark 10:30 holds a hundredfold and persecutions in a single line without one canceling the other, and it is the Holy Spirit who teaches a man to hold two true things at the same time without dropping either.
So here is what is meant to happen in that booth, and it is not that you decide you are fine.
You are going to move one thing out of the waiting room category and into the receiving category, out loud, by name. Not all of it. One. The Tuesday table, or the man who calls on Sundays, or the neighbor with the shovel. You are going to say the word receive over it, because that is the verb Jesus used and it is a completely different verb from tolerate or appreciate or make do with.
And you are going to leave the other thing exactly where it is. Unresolved. Unpromised. Not traded, not closed, not explained.
You have permission from the written word to name a gift a gift while your hands are still empty of something else. That is Mark 10:30 doing precisely that, holding the hundredfold and the hardship in the same clause, and it is His Spirit who gives a man the honesty to say receive without also saying instead.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these where the table is. The right to say them was not earned by eleven good years of waiting well; it is yours in Christ, delegated, exercised in His name. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit carries it. Nothing here promises you what is not on the list, and nothing here dates anything. Whatever He does with the rest of it is His to decide, and I leave the outcome with Him.
- Booth on a Tuesday night, you are not a waiting room and I am finished treating you like one. Jesus named brothers out loud in Mark 10:30 and He named them under the word receive, so I am receiving you as something God is actually giving.
- Idea that my real life has not started, you have no right to stay at this table. God gives in this time and He said so plainly, and in the name of Jesus I am putting you out of the booth and keeping the men.
- Father, You are giving me something now and I am not going to call it a consolation, and I am also telling You the truth that I still want what I lost. I thank You that Your word names brothers on the list without ever naming what I have been waiting for, and that Your Spirit is teaching me to receive what is in front of me with my hands still open.
