Restoration ArrivingPsalm 84:10

Running Sound in the Back

This message is for to recognize the sound desk at the back as restoration arriving, when the stage the band years took is still the only shape you count as music

The hall takes ninety people if somebody puts the extra chairs down the sides. At the back there is a folding table with a cloth over it, and on the cloth a mixer with twenty four channels, half of them taped over with masking tape and written on in marker in his own handwriting. KICK. SNARE. TRES. BASS. VOC 1. VOC 2. And one that just says SECOND ROW, because a woman there sings louder than the microphone in front of her and somebody has to catch it before it hits the room wrong.

He gets there at four. Nobody else gets there at four.

He played timbales for eleven years. Weddings, quinces, the fiesta on the plaza every August, a van with a door that had to be held shut by whoever drew the short straw, three hundred nights in the busiest of those years. Then a truck came through the light on a street he could still draw from memory, and the van went over with the trailer still hitched, and everybody walked away from it, and his left hand did not come back the way it went in. Nerve, they told him. Some of it returns. Some of it does not, and nobody can tell you which is which until it has finished not returning.

He can hold a stick. He cannot hold time. That is the sentence he uses when people ask, and he says it lightly, and it costs him something every time.

So now he is at the back. He knows that room better than anybody who has ever stood on the stage in it. He knows where the low end piles up by the kitchen door. He knows which kid eats the microphone. He knows the exact three seconds before the second chorus when the whole thing needs a hair more of the piano and not one hair more than that. And when it goes right, when ninety people are singing and the room stops being a room and becomes one sound, he is standing behind a folding table with two fingers on a fader and not one person is looking at him.

He does not count that as music. He counts the stage as music. That is the entire trouble, and he has been carrying it for two years without saying it to anyone.

You have a back of the room too. It might be the desk instead of the ward, or the small class instead of the big one, or the passenger seat instead of the wheel, or the phone calls you make on Tuesdays that nobody knows about. Something took the shape you counted, and what you have now is real and useful and in your actual hands, and you have quietly filed it under making do. You are already standing inside the thing you have been waiting to arrive. It is written in Psalm 84:10 that a doorkeeper has an address in the house of God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been standing at that folding table with you at four in the afternoon, every week, while you waited for restoration to show up looking like something else.

The psalmist is not ranking jobs

Here is the verse, and almost everybody reads it as a comparison between two kinds of work.

For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.Psalm 84:10

Look at what is actually on either side of both comparisons. A day in Your courts, against a thousand days somewhere else. A doorkeeper in the house of my God, against dwelling in the tents of wickedness. Both halves compare an address to an address. Neither half compares a job to a job. The psalmist is not telling you that holding a door is more satisfying than leading the singing, and he is certainly not telling you that the back of the room is preferable to the stage. He is saying that where he is standing is God's house, and that fact does not thin out because of what he is holding while he stands in it.

So nobody on this page is going to tell you the sound desk is the better thing. It is not a competition and you would smell the lie in a second. You are inside the house, and the address is the part that was never downgraded. That is what is written in Psalm 84:10, where the doorkeeper is placed in the house of God rather than outside it looking in, and it is the Holy Spirit who has put a person at a folding table in a room full of singing and called it His own house.

Restoration is not obliged to match

Now the part that has taken two years to get to.

Restored is not replaced. Replaced would be somebody handing you back the same shape with the dents knocked out of it: the same stage, the same eleven years, the same hand. Nobody is handing you that, and pretending otherwise would waste your afternoon. Restored is God putting a person back into use, and He is under no obligation to send you back out through the doorway you came in by. That is not Him being stingy. It is Him not being a photocopier.

And hear this clearly, because this is the exact place where these articles usually cheat: nothing here closes the grief over the band. It does not close today and it is not supposed to. You are allowed to have a fader under your fingers and eleven years in your chest at the same time, and neither one cancels the other, and anybody who tells you the new thing means you should be over the old thing has told you something God never said.

You have both of those things in your hands at once, and that is not a contradiction you have to resolve. Scripture holds them together in one man in one book: Ezra 3:12 has the old men weeping at the sound of the new foundation while everybody around them shouts, and God did not correct either group. It is the same Spirit standing in both noises, and He has never once asked a person to choose which of the two is allowed to be true.

The breakthrough

So here is what is meant to happen, and it is not a promotion and it is not a pep talk.

You are going to name one thing. One thing already in your life, already in your hands, already happening every week: the desk, the classroom, the calls, the two apprentices, the woman in the second row whose voice you catch before it hits the room wrong. And you are going to say it out loud as restoration arriving, in those words, rather than as the arrangement you settled for while waiting for the real thing.

That is not positive thinking and it is not a reframe. It is naming accurately. The thing was already restoration; the only inaccurate part was the label.

You have the authority to call it by its right name, out loud, tonight. Genesis 2:19 has God bringing His own creatures to a man to see what he would call them, so naming has been human work from the first page of Scripture, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a true name land in a person's own chest instead of just passing their lips.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, standing at the back where you actually are. You are in Christ, and the right to name what God has put in your hands was given to you by Him and not earned by keeping a good attitude for two years. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit carries it. Nothing here says the eleven years are coming back, nothing here dates anything, and nothing here is telling you which thing was the greater one. His timing is His own and the outcome is His. What is written in Psalm 84:10 is an address in His house, and that address is already yours.

  1. Folding table at the back of the hall, you are not a consolation prize. Psalm 84:10 puts a doorkeeper inside the house of God and calls that address a good one, so I am naming you what you actually are: restoration arriving, and I am receiving you with my own hands.
  2. Verdict that what I was for ended in that van, you do not get to stand here. Restored is not replaced and I am not asking for the same shape back, and Scripture says His house has room for a doorkeeper, so in the name of Jesus I take my place in it with the hand I have.
  3. Lord, You have not handed the eleven years back and I am not pretending You have. I thank You that Your Spirit put me in a room I know better than anybody and gave me something real to do in it, and I am putting my hand on the desk tonight and calling it by its own name.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
