The Student Who Came Back at Fifty

He got as far as the doorway twice.

The first time he told himself he was only passing, which was almost true, because the hall is on the route between the parking lot and the bus, and a man is allowed to slow down outside a lit window on a cold evening. The second time he actually stopped, with his hand on the frame, and looked in for the length of about four breaths, and then went home and did not tell his wife.

Inside there are long tables, and lamps at intervals, and maybe a dozen people, and the sound. That is the thing that undoes him. Not the sight of it. The sound: pages, and two voices going at once at the far end, and somebody laughing at something in a book, which is a specific laugh you only ever hear in a room like that.

He was twenty-nine when he stopped. His father had the stroke in October and the shop could not run itself, and there was nobody else, and it was not a decision so much as a set of facts arranging themselves around him. He kept it open for twenty years. He was good at it, and it fed people, and he does not regret one hour of it in the way people mean when they ask him if he regrets it.

The shop sold in the spring. He is fifty. He has time now, for the first time since he was twenty-nine, and he has discovered that time is not the thing he was short of.

The sentence in his head is very tidy and he has never argued with it: a man does not walk back into a room like that at fifty. He would be the oldest beginner in the building. Somebody would be kind to him, and the kindness would be the worst part. Somebody else would say we thought you had moved away, and he would have to put twenty years into one sentence, standing in a doorway with his coat still on.

So he has stood in the doorway twice and gone home twice, and the lamps go off at half past nine, and he knows that because he has been past at half past nine.

You have a doorway. Maybe it is a room, maybe it is a course, maybe it is a phone number, maybe it is a sentence you would have to say to one person to start. And you have done the arithmetic that ends with the word late, and it is very tidy, and you have never once argued with it either. You are carrying a conclusion about your own life that you have never checked against anything. Acts 7:30 counts out the years a man spent on the back side of a desert and then says what happened after them, and it is written as arithmetic and not as an apology, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept you standing at that doorway instead of taking a different route home.

Stephen counted the missing years out loud

There is a man in Acts giving the last speech of his life in front of a council that is going to kill him for it, and he spends a remarkable amount of it doing arithmetic.

He walks them through Moses. Forty years in Pharaoh's house, learned in all the wisdom of Egypt, mighty in words and deeds. Then the killing, and the flight, and then this:

Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.Acts 7:30

Read what Stephen does with the middle forty. He does not skip them. He does not call them wasted, and he does not call them a season of preparation either, which is the thing people say to make a gap sound useful. He says the number out loud, in a courtroom, as part of the account. Forty years of sheep on somebody else's land, and Stephen counts them into the record the same way he counts the palace years, and then he says what happened next.

And notice how old the man is when the bush burns. Eighty. Forty in a palace, forty in a desert, and the assignment starts at eighty, which is the least promising résumé anybody has ever brought to anything.

You are not looking at a God who has a cutoff age, and nothing in the written record suggests He has ever kept one. Acts 7:30 puts the number in the text without shame, and it is the Holy Spirit who has preserved that arithmetic for two thousand years so that a man at a doorway at fifty could read it on a Tuesday.

Now, straight away, because it would be dishonest to let that run without it. I am reading you what God is like. I am not telling you what He is about to do in your life, and I am not going to hand you a bush. That belongs to Him and nobody on this page gets to promise it to you.

Restored into something, and not by the size of it

Here is where this category gets misused, so let me put a fence around it.

Usefulness is not the proof of restoration. If you walk into that hall and sit down and find you cannot follow it, you are not less restored than a man who walks in and shines. If your body or your memory or your nerves are genuinely not what they were, and effort is not going to close that gap, then effort is not going to close that gap, and no paragraph of mine gets to imply otherwise. There are people reading this whose capacity is actually reduced, permanently, and the honest thing to say is that God restoring you is not conditional on your output. It never was. That would make you a machine that He fixes rather than a son He is restoring.

And restored is not replaced, here as everywhere on this site. You are not being handed your twenty-nine year old self back with his memory and his stamina and his twenty years still in front of him. There is a gap, it has a length, and it does not get filled in. You walk back in at fifty with fifty-year-old eyes and everything the shop put into your hands, which is not nothing and is also not what you lost.

You have a place in front of you that is not compensation for the years and does not need to be, because it is not being handed to you as payment. It is written in Romans 11:29 that the gifts and the calling of God are without revocation, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept a thing alive in a man behind a counter for two decades of Octobers.

And if you are angry at the October it started in, then be angry at it. You were taken out of that room by facts you did not arrange, and God has never once required you to be at peace with it first. Job is full of protest that God did not correct, that is written into the book, and it is the same Spirit who left it in who is with you at half past nine outside a hall with the lamps going off.
