The Uncle Who Was Not There

There are nineteen people in a room built for eight, and he is the one carrying the empty glasses out, because carrying things is the only role in this house he is certain he is allowed.

Eleven years. He went for work, for two, and then there was a form, and the form went into a system, and the system did not give it back. He is not going to explain the whole of it to you and it would not help if he did. What matters is that for eleven years the going home was one office letter away and the letter did not come, and every time somebody in the family said next year they meant it, and it was not next year.

He knows every birthday. That is what almost nobody understands about him. He kept a list on the back page of a notebook and he never missed one, not a single one, on a screen, at whatever hour it was where he was: the propped up phone, the cake carried in sideways, the singing going out of sync with the delay, everybody shouting at him to say something and him saying the same four words for eleven years while a child he had never held blew out candles.

The girl on the sofa now was four when he left. She is fifteen and she has her mother's eyebrows and she calls him Uncle in the polite way you address a family friend. The boy who was born the second winter, the one whose whole existence he has only ever seen through glass, is seventeen and enormous and standing by the door with his shoes half on.

He has not said one thing tonight that mattered. That is deliberate, though nobody else in the room knows it is deliberate. He asks about school. He passes the plate. He laughs a beat after everybody else because he is watching to see when the laugh comes. When his brother tells a story about the family that he is not in, he nods along as though he had heard it before, and he had, on the phone, and it is not the same as having been there and he knows it.

Because here is the rule he made, somewhere over those eleven years, and he made it alone and never said it out loud to anybody: a man who was not there does not get to speak. He missed all of it. Every fever, every first day, every argument in that kitchen, every funeral. So he can carry glasses. He can pay for things. He can be pleasant. But the moment anybody in this family needs something said that actually matters, he will pass it to his brother, who was there, and who has the standing.

Then the seventeen year old comes into the kitchen where he is at the sink, and shuts the door most of the way, and says: can I ask you something.

And the uncle feels the whole eleven years arrive in his throat at once, and he hears himself starting to say, you should ask your father.

You have that rule. You are holding a disqualification you wrote yourself, and Luke 22:32 hands a man his assignment before the worst night of his life rather than after his best one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been keeping that assignment for you the entire eleven years. Stay with me. This is not going to be about making up for anything.

Look at when the assignment was handed over

The most important thing about this verse is the clock.

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.Luke 22:32

It is the upper room. Peter has not denied anybody yet. He is still full of himself, still promising prison and death, still hours away from a courtyard and a fire and a girl at the gate. And into that, before any of it, Jesus tells him two things: that He has prayed for him, and that once he has turned back he is to strengthen his brothers.

The commission is issued in advance. Not as a reward at the end of a good stretch. Not on review of his attendance. Before the failure, in full knowledge of the failure, with the failure named in the previous breath.

Now let me say something plainly, because this verse gets misused and I am not going to do that to you. Your years away were not a denial. You did not fail anybody. A form went into a system and did not come out, and I refuse to let a passage about Peter turn into a suggestion that the eleven years are something you have to answer for. What I want from this verse is the timing, and the timing is this: the qualification to strengthen your brothers is the turning, not the record.

And notice the direction of it. Strengthen your brothers. Not, go and explain yourself to your brothers. Not, earn your way back into the room. Not, make it up to them. The assignment points forward and outward, at people who need something, and it has nothing at all to do with squaring the ledger of where you have been.

You are holding an assignment that was issued before your years away and did not lapse during them, and it is written that He prayed for the man first and gave him the work second, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept it live in you while you were carrying glasses.

Restored into something, and not only out of something

Here is the honest half, and this site does not skip it.

The eleven birthdays are gone. There is no version of this where the four year old on that screen is four again and he is in the room for it. Restored has never meant replaced, and I will not stand here and tell you that being useful now settles the account for what was taken then. It does not settle it. Nothing settles it. The years were taken and they stay taken, and if somebody at that party tells you that at least it is over now, they mean well and they are not saying a true thing about eleven years.

What is happening is different and larger. God restores a person out of something and He also restores them into something, and the second half is the one almost nobody gets told about. Peter did not simply get put back. He got given a job on the far side, and the job was aimed at people, and the very thing that made him fit for it was the part of his life he would have paid anything to erase.

And hear this carefully, because it is where messages like this one usually go wrong. Being useful is not the proof that you are restored. If you never say another significant word to anybody in that family, you are still His and you are still whole. Some people come back from years away with far less capacity than they left with, and that is not a shortfall in them and it does not get fixed by trying harder. The assignment is sized by the One who gives it, and not by you.

You are restored into something and not only out of something, and Scripture puts the strengthening of the brothers on the other side of the turning rather than on the other side of a clean record, and the Holy Spirit is the one who decides the size of what He hands you.
