Restored To ServeJohn 9:25

Too Much for the Room

This message is for to be restored into usefulness when you were told your account of those years is too much for a room, and you have kept your mouth shut about it ever since

The hallway has a folding table with a shoebox of name badges nobody collected, a stack of programs going soft at the corners, and carpet in the pattern they choose because it hides everything. There is a door with a small window in it, and through the window you can see the backs of forty heads and a screen with the next slide already up.

She is standing in that hallway with her coat over her arm.

Three years ago they asked her to take five minutes at the women's evening and tell what God had done. She said yes because it was true and because she thought a room ought to hear it. She did not perform it. She did not embellish. She said what the years had been and she said what God had done in them, plainly, in her own words, and it took about six minutes, and when she sat down the room was very quiet.

Afterward a woman from the platform team caught her in this hallway, by this table, and put a hand on her arm, and said kindly, with a small apologetic face: that was a lot for the room.

That is all she said. She was not cruel. She probably went home and did not think about it again.

Three years, and there has not been one day since that she has not thought about it.

So now there is a version. She built it over about six months without ever admitting to herself that she was building it. It runs ninety seconds. It uses the words difficult season, and it uses the word grateful twice, and it arrives at God in a way that lets everybody nod and does not disturb anybody's evening. It is true. Every sentence of it is true. It is not the truth, and she knows exactly which parts she took out and where they used to sit.

And tonight they have asked her again, and she has the ninety seconds ready, and she is standing in the hallway with her coat over her arm looking at the backs of forty heads, and what is actually going on in her chest is a fight between two things that both sound like humility.

You know this hallway. Maybe somebody said the sentence to you outright, or maybe you worked it out from a look, or maybe nobody ever said anything and you decided on your own that your account is more than people can carry. Either way you have a ninety second version and you have kept your mouth shut about the rest for years. You were not told the truth about your own account, and the silence you have kept was somebody else's idea and not God's. John 9:25 has a man saying the plain thing in front of a committee that wanted a smoother answer, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept the real sentence alive in you for three years without letting it go stale.

One thing I know

Look at where this man is standing when he says it, because the setting is half the lesson.

He answered, Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see.John 9:25

He has been called in twice. There is a committee. There are men in that room with the authority to put him out of the only community he has, and they eventually do exactly that. They are not asking him to lie, quite. They are asking him to give an account that will let the meeting end tidily, and everybody in the room understands the assignment except him.

And what he hands them is not theology, not a defense, not a speech, and not a version with the hard parts sanded off to keep the evening pleasant. It is the shortest possible sentence containing the thing he actually knows.

Now notice the other half, because most people quote only the famous line. He also says what he does not know, and he says it first. Whether the man is a sinner, I do not know. He will not inflate it to win the room and he will not shrink it to keep the room. He gives exactly the size of the thing.

That is the whole craft of a true account, and nobody ever teaches it. Say only what you know. Say all of what you know. Do not add a clause to make it land harder and do not remove one to make it go down easier, and both of those are the same sin wearing different clothes.

You have one thing you know that nobody in that hallway can adjust for you. It is written in John 9:25 that a man kept the size of his own account in front of people who could cost him everything, and it is the Holy Spirit in you who is the reason you can still feel the difference between the ninety seconds and the truth.

Restored is not the same word as replaced

Here is what this site exists to say, and then here is what I refuse to build on top of it.

Restored is not replaced. God is not handing you back the woman who walked into that hall three years ago and had never been taken aside by anybody. She is gone, and the article that promised her back would be lying to you. Restored means God puts back into a person what was taken out of them, and what was taken from you in this hallway was your voice about your own life.

And now the part this category gets wrong constantly, so hear me. I am not telling you that being useful is how you know God has restored you. That trade gets made all over the church and it is a bad trade: it turns a person into a function and then makes them audition for their own healing. God restores people who will never stand in front of a room again. He restores people whose bodies do not permit a platform, people with nothing to volunteer, people whose whole ministry for a decade is one phone call a week. He restores them exactly as much, and He does not grade on output.

So if your capacity is genuinely reduced, and for some of you reading this it is, nothing here is asking you to push through it. There is work in front of you that fits the body and the week you actually have, and that work is not a smaller version of somebody else's. It is yours.

You are restored into something and not only out of something, and the something is sized for you. Scripture says in John 9:25 that one man with one sentence was enough, and it is the same Spirit who gave that man his nerve who is at work in the life you can actually live.

And your anger about that hallway is not on trial here. Not at the woman, not at the platform team, not at the three years of ninety seconds. Something was taken from you in a corridor by a stack of programs, and anger is what a person feels when something is taken. I am not naming one thing for you to do about anybody in that building. The account is God's, and He is not careless with what people do to the ones He is restoring.

The breakthrough

So here is what happens now, and it is not that you walk in there tonight and give the six minutes.

It might be that. It might not, and either way the decision is yours and God's and not the platform team's. What has to happen first is smaller and it is underneath: you stop treating the ninety seconds as your account. Not by telling everybody everything. By knowing, in yourself, that the true thing is the true thing, that it did not become too much because somebody found it heavy in a corridor, and that God has never once flinched at any part of it.

And then do one thing today that belongs to the life ahead of you rather than to the account of what was taken. One. Small enough that it fits inside the capacity you have on an ordinary Tuesday: send the message, put the date in, say yes to the small thing, open the door for the person behind you, ask the young woman at the back how she is and then stay for the answer. You are already carrying what you are being restored into, and none of it has to be impressive to be it. It is written in John 9:25 that the whole of a man's usefulness that day was one clear sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts the sentence and the person in the same room at the same time, which was never your job to arrange.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, standing in the hallway or standing in your kitchen, coat on or coat off. You are in Christ, and the standing to give an account of your own life was given to you by Him and was never issued by a platform team, so nothing here depends on anybody inviting you. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it. And the outcome is His: nothing here dates anything, nothing here promises you a microphone, and where your account goes and who hears it belongs to God and is not being arranged by me.

  1. Ninety second version, you are not the truth and I am done handing you out. It is written in John 9:25 that a man in front of a committee said one plain thing he knew and would not sand it down, so you do not get another evening out of my mouth.
  2. Fear that I am too much, you have no right to stay in this hallway. What God did in those years is the correct size already and I am not shrinking it to keep a room comfortable; in the name of Jesus I am taking back my own account, and Scripture is what I am standing on and not my nerve.
  3. Father, You were in every one of those years and You have never once found what happened to me too heavy to hear. I thank You that Your word keeps one honest sentence from one ordinary man on the record forever, and that Your Spirit is the one who chooses the room. Today I am doing one small thing that belongs to the life ahead, and I am leaving the size of it with You.
