He Gives BackPsalm 105:19

The Sentence in His Voice

This message is for to hold the twenty years one man's public sentence took you out of the thing you were made for, without repeating his verdict about you in his voice for the rest of your life

The sentence took four seconds to say and it has been running for twenty years.

He was twenty-six, and he taught a weekday class in a room with fourteen chairs in it, and he was good. Not brilliant. Good, and getting better, and the kind of teacher who stayed forty minutes after because somebody asked a question in the doorway. He had a shelf of books he had bought one at a time with money he did not really have, and the spines were cracked because he actually read them, and there were pencil marks in every margin.

The older man said it at a meeting. Not in private, not in a letter, not to his face in a hallway where it could have been answered. At a meeting, with a room in it, in the voice that room had learned to believe. He said, that one reads like a man who wants to be right more than he wants to be true.

That was the whole thing. Twelve words, said once. Nobody stood up. Two people looked at the table. One person said something afterward in the parking lot that was meant kindly and that he has never been able to remember properly.

He drove a forklift for four years and then he managed the people who drove them for sixteen. He is good at that too. He is respected there. He knows every one of their kids' names, and he is the one who says the words at retirements because everybody agrees he is good with words, which is a sentence he has heard four hundred times and has never once been able to hear without flinching.

The books are still on the shelf in the small room at the back of the house. He dusts around them. He does not take them down.

And here is the part he has never told anybody, including his wife, who knows most of it. He can still do the voice. Not out loud. In his head, when he reads anything at all, when he starts to say something at a table, when he catches himself getting interested in an idea. The voice arrives with the sentence in it, and it is perfect, and after twenty years of practice the voice in his head has become better at being that man than the man ever was.

You have a sentence too. Maybe it was said in a meeting or a courtroom or a kitchen, maybe it took four seconds, maybe the person who said it has been dead for years and would not recognize you on the street. It was not an accident and it was not your doing. A person made choices and you paid for them, and you have been quoting them ever since in a voice you did not choose to keep. You are carrying a sentence that was never a verdict, and the God who was in the room when it was said has not entered it into any record. Psalm 105 says plainly which word was doing the actual work on Joseph in the iron, and it was not the word of his accusers, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been standing under you in the years when you could not tell the difference.

Two words were spoken over Joseph, and the psalm names which one mattered

There were two sentences alive in that Egyptian prison and everybody remembers the wrong one.

The first was the accusation. A powerful household said a thing about a young foreigner, and it was false, and it went into the record, and it cost him years he could not get back. Nobody in the story ever retracts it. There is no scene where the house calls him back and says, we were wrong about you. It does not happen.

The second sentence is the one the psalmist goes out of his way to name.

until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him.Psalm 105:19

Read what that verse says was in the cell with him. Not the slander. The word. The psalm has just described his feet hurt with fetters and his neck put in iron, and then it turns and says what was actually working on him in there, and it names the word of the LORD and nothing else. The accusation held his body. It was not what was forming him.

You are not being formed by the sentence that man said, whatever it has been doing to your ears. Psalm 105:19 puts the word of the Lord in the cell as the one thing at work, that is written, and it is the same Spirit who kept Joseph reading in the iron who is with you in a small room at the back of a house where a shelf has not been touched in twenty years.

And nothing here is asking you to soften what happened. It was not an accident. It was not a misunderstanding you should have handled better, and it was not your doing, and no paragraph in this article is going to arrive at the idea that you brought some of it on yourself. You did not. The account of what that man did belongs to God and it is filed with Him, and one of the mercies of that is that you are not the clerk. You never were. You have been keeping a ledger that was never assigned to you.

He gives back the reader, not the shelf

Here is the honest part, and the whole site stands on it.

Restored is not replaced. Twenty years do not come back and there is no version of this where a room with fourteen chairs in it is waiting with your name outside the door and the pencil marks still fresh in the margins. If somebody has told you that is what restoration means, they were being kind and they were wrong. What God gives back is not the shelf. It is the person who used to read.

Look at Joseph again, and look at what he actually got. Not his twenties. Not an apology. Not one line of retraction from the house that lied about him. He got a life on the other side of it, and a name for his son that told the truth about the address, and he stayed the man who could read a dream and say what it meant, because that was in him and a cell did not take it out.

You have the thing you were made for still in you, and a sentence spoken in a meeting did not have the authority to remove it. It is written in Romans 11:29 that the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, which means unwithdrawn, and it is the Holy Spirit who has kept that gift alive under a forklift and a warehouse and twenty quiet years.

You were made for the thing you stopped doing, and you were not disqualified by the fact that somebody stopped you. Psalm 105:19 is the written proof that a man in irons was being worked on by the word of the Lord and not by his accusation, and it is the same Spirit doing that work in you, at whatever speed He is doing it.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and notice what it is not. It is not a courtroom. It is not a letter. It is not a scene where you finally say the thing you should have said in that meeting.

It is smaller than that and it is much harder. You are going to say, out loud, in your own voice, what was taken and who it belonged to. The class. The room with fourteen chairs. The twenty years. Say who they belonged to: they were yours. Not stolen from a cause or a school or a family. Yours.

And then you are going to stop talking. No sentence about what should happen to anybody. Not because you have made peace with it, and not because this article is going to tell you when or whether to forgive, which is not mine to time for you. You stop because the account is God's and He is not asking you to prosecute it, and every sentence you add about the man is a sentence you are still writing in his voice.

You are handing over an account you were never given to keep, and putting it down is not the same as saying it did not happen. It is written in Deuteronomy 32:35 that judgment belongs to God and not to the injured party, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it possible to set a thing down without pretending it weighed nothing.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, out loud, in your own voice, and if it comes out rusty then it comes out rusty. This authority is not yours because you were innocent, though you were; it is yours in Christ, given to you by the One who stood in front of a false witness and did not open His mouth, and who was not defined by anything said in that room either. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes the words live. Speak to the shelf and to the sentence, say nothing about the man, and leave the outcome to Him, however He answers, because the account is His and it always was.

  1. Shelf of books never opened again, you are not the record of what I am. It is written that the word of the Lord was the thing testing Joseph in the iron, and that is the word I am standing on, so you can stay dusty and you still do not get to file a verdict.
  2. Verdict I have been reading in his voice, you have no right to stay in my mouth. In the name of Jesus I am handing the whole account to God, who saw the meeting and the room and the twenty years, and I am saying my own sentences in my own voice from here.
  3. Father, You are the God who was in the room when it was said, and You have never entered it against me. I thank You that Your word puts the testing of Joseph in Your hands and not in his accusers', and that Your Spirit has kept alive in me the thing I was made for. I am saying out loud today what was taken and who it belonged to, and then I am stopping there.
