He Gives BackPsalm 55:22

The Message I Kept Carrying

This message is for to hold the eight years of being the message carrier between two parents, without keeping the belief you formed that your job is to absorb what other people decide

It was one stone house cut into two, the way they used to build them, with one long porch running across the front and a door at either end. His mother kept the left door. His father moved to the right door the spring he turned nine, because his grandmother was in that half and there was a room going spare, and everyone said it was sensible.

Eleven steps. He counted them once and then never had to count them again. Eleven steps from his mother's door to his father's door, across a porch with a crack in the third slab and a boot scraper nobody used.

He was the only thing that ever crossed it.

Tell your father the water bill came. Ask your mother if she is going to be at the school thing. Tell him I am not discussing it on the porch. Tell her that is not what I said.

And he got good at it. That is the part he cannot talk about without his voice going strange. By ten he had learned to edit. He would take a sentence with a blade in it and he would carry it eleven steps and put it down softer, because he had worked out that if he delivered it the way it was handed to him, one of the two doors would slam, and then there would be a night. So he changed the words. He took out the part that would land. He walked the anger the eleven steps and left it on the porch and delivered the rest.

Eight years of that. Nine to seventeen. He was the wire, and he was the thing that made the wire safe to touch.

He is forty-one now. He lives four hundred miles from that porch and he has not walked across it in twenty years. And he is still doing it.

He is the one at work who takes the bad news to the team, always, because he can soften it and the others cannot. He is the one who tells his sister things their father should be telling her. In his own house, when there is something he actually wants, he has to write it down first, because a want does not come out of his mouth easily; only other people's do. When somebody is upset in a room he is in, something in his chest picks it up before he has decided to, and carries it, and puts it down softer somewhere else.

Nobody ever taught him that. He worked it out on eleven steps of stone when he was nine years old, because it was the only thing that made the nights survivable, and it worked, and that is exactly why it never came off.

You have your own eleven steps. Maybe it was two doors, maybe it was a mother who needed managing, maybe it was a house where you were the barometer and everyone else was the weather. You were a child and you built something clever, and it worked, and you have been running it ever since in rooms that have nothing to do with that house. You are carrying a message that was never addressed to you. That is not a figure of speech I am reaching for; it is written in Psalm 55:22 that a burden can be cast off a person entirely and onto the Lord, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying you across every porch since, whether or not anybody said so out loud.

The psalm this verse actually comes from

People quote the verse. Almost nobody reads the psalm it sits in, and the psalm is why the verse is worth anything to you.

Psalm 55 is not a poem about being tired. It is a man writing about betrayal by somebody close. He says it plainly: it is not an enemy who taunts him, because an enemy he could hide from. It is his equal, his companion, his familiar friend, someone he had walked with into the house of God. That is the room this verse is spoken in. Not stress. Not a hard week. A person you were supposed to be safe with.

And then, at the end of all that, he writes this:

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

Cast is a rough word and it is chosen on purpose. It is not arrange, it is not manage, it is not carry more gracefully. It is throw. It is the word for getting a thing off you and away from you, in one movement, and the thing lands on Him.

Now hear what the verse does not say, because this is where a page like this usually goes wrong. It does not hand you an instruction about your mother. It does not hand you one about your father. There is no course of action here, no case to build, no conversation you are being told to have and no sentence you owe anybody. The account of what happened on that porch is God's, He has had it the whole time, and He has never once asked you to hold it for Him.

And I want to be exact about something else, because you have probably done this to yourself for thirty years. You were nine. There is no reading of this in which a nine year old is a party to what the adults were doing. Nothing you did made that porch what it was and nothing you failed to do would have made it different. You are not the reason any of it happened, and you never were. That is not sentiment: Psalm 55 puts the weight squarely on the one who broke faith and never once on the one who was left carrying it, and it is the same Spirit who inspired that psalm who has been telling you so quietly for years while you talked over Him.

What comes back, and what does not

Here is the honest part, and this whole site stands on it.

Nobody is handing you back nine to seventeen. Those eight years are spent. You do not get a second boyhood on that porch where the doors stay open and nobody sends a message through you, and I am not going to imply that God has one in a drawer somewhere. Restored is not the same word as replaced. Replaced would mean a copy, a substitute childhood issued to make up the difference, and there is no such thing and there never was.

So look at what is actually being given back, because it is not nothing and it is not a consolation prize either.

He is giving back your weight limit. The boy learned that his job was to absorb whatever the adults decided, and to carry it, and to put it down softer so nobody got hurt. That belief was installed at nine and it has been running your chest ever since, in offices and kitchens and cars where nobody handed you anything at all. It is not a character trait. It is a load-bearing wall somebody else built in your house, and it can come out.

You have a burden that is already legally somebody else's, and it was already His before you ever read this. Psalm 55:22 is the written ground for that, cast it and He sustains you, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the actual lifting off, because a hand that has held something since it was nine does not open by being told to.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is quieter than you expect.

You are going to say out loud what was taken, and who it belonged to. That is all. Not a plan. Not a letter. Not a conversation with anybody, and nothing at all about what should happen to another human being, because that is not your account to settle and this page is not going to hand it to you as though it were.

Just the naming. Eight years of being the wire belonged to a boy of nine, and they were taken. Say it in your own words, with the porch in the room, and let it be as plain and as unliterary as you like.

You are permitted to name it without doing anything about it, and the naming is the whole of your part. It is written that the casting is what a person does and the sustaining is what God does, in that order, in Psalm 55:22, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a person upright in the seconds after they let go of something they have been gripping since childhood.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting down, with your hands where you can see them. The authority to say them is not yours by nature and it is not earned by how well you carried anything. It belongs to you because you are in Christ, and it is His. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. What He does about anything or anyone else is His to decide, and there is nothing in these three lines aimed at another person.

  1. Stone porch between two front doors, you are not my route and I am not your carrier. It is written in Psalm 55:22 that the burden goes onto the Lord and He sustains the one who casts it, so I am setting down here what was never addressed to me.
  2. Belief that absorbing it is what I am for, you have no right to keep speaking in my chest. It is written that He sustains the one who casts the burden, and in the name of Jesus I say that I am carried and not the carrier, and what other people decide is theirs to hold.
  3. Father, You saw the whole of that porch and I do not have to describe it to You, and the account is Yours and I am not keeping it for You. Your word in Psalm 55:22 is the ground I am standing on, and Your Spirit is the one holding those eight years while I take my hands off them. I am naming out loud what was taken and who it belonged to, and I am saying nothing about what should happen to anyone.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
