He Gives BackPsalm 142:4

The Sister Who Did Not Come

This message is for to hold the seven caregiving years your sister's absence made yours alone, without keeping the private verdict that you are the one nobody comes for

There is a kettle on the dresser in the back bedroom, on a folded towel, next to a jar of instant coffee and a spoon that lives there now. It is on the dresser because the kitchen is at the other end of the hall, and the other end of the hall is too far.

Yvette put it there in the first year. She thought it was temporary. It has been there seven.

The room has a hospital bed in it, the kind that whirs when you raise the head of it, and an oxygen concentrator that clicks and sighs on a cycle she could count in her sleep and often does. There is a chair by the window with a blanket over the arm, and the blanket has a shape worn into it. There is a monitor on the nightstand tuned to a channel that shows old game shows all night.

Her mother is in the bed. Her mother has been in that bed, in some version of that condition, for seven years, and Yvette has done every single thing. The lifting. The medications, which she now knows better than the pharmacist. The three in the morning when the breathing changes. The insurance calls that take ninety minutes and end with a different department. The bedsheets, twice some nights.

Her sister lives ninety minutes away.

Her sister calls on Sundays. The calls are warm. She asks how Mama is, and she asks how Yvette is holding up, and she says she does not know how Yvette does it, and she means all of it, and then the call ends and Sunday ends and the week starts again.

Seven years. Yvette has learned the sound of every car that slows on that street. There is a particular click the front gate makes, and for about two years her whole body used to come up off the chair at it, every time, before her mind caught up. It stopped doing that somewhere in year three. She could not tell you the day.

She is not sitting in that room composing arguments. That is what people assume, and it is not what is happening. What is happening is much quieter and much worse. Somewhere in those seven years, in a room where nobody came, she wrote a sentence about herself and filed it, and the sentence was: I am the one nobody comes for.

If you have written a sentence like that in a back bedroom, then stay with me, because I am not here to argue with your seven years. You are holding a fact that is entirely accurate and a verdict that was never yours to sign, and Psalm 142:4 shows a man saying the honest thing out loud in a cave with no one correcting him for it, and the Holy Spirit has been in that back bedroom with you through every single one of those nights.

The psalm says it, and God left it in the book

There is a psalm written by a man hiding in a cave, and it contains a sentence that most people would edit out of a prayer if they were coaching somebody.

I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.Psalm 142:4

Read what he actually does. He looks. He does not look away, he does not spiritualize it, he does not add a quick clause about how he is sure everyone is doing their best. He looks at his right hand, which is the place where a defender was supposed to stand, and he reports what is there, which is nobody.

And then he says the flat sentence. No man cared for my soul.

Now here is the thing I want you to notice, and it is the whole reason I brought you to this psalm instead of a nicer one. God put that sentence in the book. It is not a warning label. It is not there as an example of what not to say. It sits in Scripture in the man's own voice, uncorrected, and it has sat there for three thousand years.

Nobody told him he was being ungrateful. Nobody rushed in to say that his friends had their own struggles. The observation was allowed to be true.

You are permitted to look at your right hand and say what is standing there, because it is written in Psalm 142:4 in a man's own words with no correction attached, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line is not going to flinch when you say yours.

Your anger about those seven years is not the problem in this room. It never was. It is an accurate response to something that actually happened, and I am not going to spend one sentence of this page trying to talk you out of it.

A fact and a verdict are two different objects

Now let me do the work I am actually here to do, because there are two things in your hands and you have been carrying them as one thing.

The first is a fact. The door did not open for seven years. Nobody came. You did the lifting alone, you did the nights alone, and the years that went into that room came out of your one life and are not in your one life anymore. That is a fact. It is accurate, it is yours, and you may keep it. Nothing on this page is asking you to set it down or soften it.

The second is a verdict. Therefore I am the one nobody comes for. And that is not a fact at all. That is a sentence about who you are, delivered by an empty hallway, and an empty hallway has no authority to say anything about a human soul.

Notice what I am not doing. I am not telling you what was in your sister's heart. I do not know, you do not know, and it is not the subject of this page and it never will be. This site is about what was taken from you, not about the account of anybody who took it, because that account is God's, He keeps it Himself, and He has never once asked you to be its bookkeeper.

I am also not going to ask you to forgive anybody today. That is not the price of admission here. Nobody gets to put a turnstile in front of a hurting woman and call it discipleship.

And hear this plainly, because a lot of capable people carry it in silence: none of this happened because you were the strong one. Being the one who could do it is not the same as being the one who owed it.

You have a God who has already read the whole record and has never once written that sentence about you, and it is written in Psalm 142:5 that He is your refuge and your portion in the land of the living, and the same Spirit who kept David company in the cave has been keeping you company in that chair by the window.

So what does He restore? Not a substitute sister. He does not hand out replacements, and if He did, a replacement would be an insult dressed as a gift. He does not hand you the seven years back as though they had merely been misplaced. Restoration is repair on the original, and the original here is you. He is restoring the person the seven years were taken out of, and whether He ever restores anything else is His and this page will not predict it for you.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is one sentence long.

You are going to name what was taken, and who it belonged to, and then you are going to stop talking. That is the entire move, and the stopping is half of it.

Most people cannot get through that sentence without the second half arriving, the part about who should have been there and what they ought to have done and what they will one day understand. And the moment that clause arrives, you are no longer holding your own loss. You are prosecuting a case, and a case takes energy that has to come from somewhere, and it comes out of the same seven years you are already short.

So we are going to leave the case with its rightful owner. God has it. He is not confused about what happened, He does not need your evidence, and He has never asked you to be the one who settles it.

You are free to put the whole account down tonight, because it is written in Psalm 31:15 that your times are in His hand and never in anybody else's, and the Holy Spirit is the One who takes the weight off your hands the moment you actually open them.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Door that never opened, you are a fact and you are not a verdict. Psalm 142:4 says the man in the cave looked and found no one, and the word kept the sentence on the page without correcting him. In the name of Jesus I am finished letting you speak about me.
  2. Verdict that says nobody comes for me, you were never given the authority to name me. It is written in Psalm 142:5 that He is my refuge and my portion in the land of the living, and His Spirit has been in that back bedroom through every night I worked alone. I am a woman God came for.
  3. Father, You cared for my soul in a room where no one else did, and I am handing You the account tonight. Your word kept the honest sentence on the page and Your Spirit kept me company underneath it. I am naming what was taken, and I am leaving the rest with You.
