The Seat I Was Not In

There are two cars in the driveway and one of them has not been driven in nine years.

He starts it on the first Saturday of the month so the battery does not give out. Sits in it with the door open and one foot on the concrete, lets it idle for eleven minutes by the clock on the dash, and shuts it off. The parking sticker on the windshield expired the same year everything else did. There is a hair tie around the gear shift. There is a receipt in the door pocket for gas, and a state fair map folded to the livestock barns, and a pair of sunglasses in the cup holder that he has never once moved.

He does not drive it because it is hers, and because she cannot, and because the day he sells it is a day he has decided not to have yet.

And every single time he sits in that seat, the same reel runs.

He was supposed to drive that night. It was his turn, it was his truck she took because his had the good headlights, and he stayed back for forty minutes to finish something at the shop that he could not now tell you one detail of. Forty minutes. The whole nine years hang off forty minutes, in the version of the story he has told himself in that driveway roughly four thousand times.

He does not say it out loud anymore. He learned early that when he says it, people jump in fast to tell him it was not his fault, and he can hear in their voices that they are right and it does not touch the reel at all. So now he just sits there with the engine running and lets it play.

Nine years of appointments. Nine years of watching her measure out what a day can hold and then measure it out smaller. Nine years of the two of them building a life in a smaller room than the one they had, and doing it well, honestly, doing it better than most people would. And a man on a county road who made a choice, whose name he knows, whose face he has not looked at since a courtroom.

That man is not the subject of this. Neither is the county road.

The subject is what a husband has done to his own name in nine years of sitting in a car that does not go anywhere. He has stopped being a man and started being a version of events. Ask him how he is and he will tell you how she is. Ask him who he is and he will tell you the story, and in that story he is always the man who was not in that seat.

You have a driveway. Maybe it is not a car. Maybe it is a room, a phone number, a stretch of road you go around instead of through, a date on the calendar you brace for a week before it comes. And you have a reel, and the reel has you in it, cast as the one who should have known, should have gone, should have driven. You are the person God is speaking to, not the version of events you have been introducing instead of yourself. It is written in Isaiah 43:1 that He calls you by name, by name and not by narrative, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been sitting in that passenger seat every first Saturday of the month while the engine idled and the reel ran.

He does not address the record

Here is the line, and it is one of the most careful sentences in Scripture about how God speaks to a person.

But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine."Isaiah 43:1

Watch what He does with the name. Jacob is a name that is a story. It is what the man did at birth and what he did to his brother and what he did to his father in law, all packed into a word, and everybody who ever said that name out loud was reciting the account. God says it. He does not pretend it is not the man's name.

And then, in the same breath, in the same sentence, He says the other one, the one He gave. He who formed you, O Israel. He is not scolding the story out of existence. He is standing on the far side of it and calling the man by what belongs to him.

Then the four words: you are mine. Not you were negligent, not you were unlucky, not you should have been forty minutes earlier. Mine.

You have a name that God is using, and the account is not it. That is Isaiah 43:1 read plainly, where the calling comes from the One who created and formed, and it is the same Spirit who carried that sentence to a people in exile who could have told you exactly whose fault it was.

And I want to be clear about something, because you have been braced for it since the second paragraph. Nobody here is going to tell you to forgive him. That is between you and God and it is not the fee for reading this page. Nobody here is going to tell you what ought to happen to him either, or build a case, or hand you a course of action. Scripture puts that account somewhere specific and it is not in your hands and it is not in mine. Your part in this is your own name, and that is plenty.

Your anger is not the problem either. Nine years is a long time and anger is the honest response to theft. I am not going to reframe it into something more comfortable for the room.

What God gives back, and what He does not

So here is the hard, honest middle of it, and I am not going to blur it.

The nine years are not coming back. Her health is what it is today and I am not going to stand on this page and predict tomorrow, because the people who do that are guessing in a confident voice and you have had enough of that. Restored is not replaced. If God were in the replacement business, restoration would mean nine years handed back, her body as it was, the reel deleted, everything even. That is not the word and it never was.

Restore means He puts back into a man what was taken out of him. And what nine years took out of you is not only her walking pace and your savings and your Saturdays. It took your name. You have been going by an incident. You introduce yourself as a set of circumstances and you answer to a version of a night, and somewhere in the middle of it you quietly agreed to a sentence nobody in heaven ever pronounced: that the wrong one of you is well.

You were never the accused in this, and nothing that happened on that road transferred a debt onto you. It is written in Isaiah 43:1 that God calls you by name and says you are His, which is a claim of ownership and not a verdict of guilt, and it is the Holy Spirit who tells a man the difference between conviction and the reel.
