Whole AgainIsaiah 49:16

The Number That Does Not Ring

This message is for to be restored as a person while your sister's decision to cut you off stays permanent and nobody is going to promise you that phone will ring

The phone is face down on the quilt, because face up she checks it, and she has learned that about herself.

It is her sister's birthday. Fifty-two. She knows the date the way she knows her own hand, and she has known it every year of the four years since the last conversation, and every year she does the same thing, which is to write something out and read it back and put the phone face down again.

The message this year said: thinking of you today. That is all. Eleven characters and a word. She looked at it for a while and then she deleted it, not because it was wrong but because she already knows what happens, which is nothing. Not an argument. Not a refusal. Nothing at all, which is its own kind of answer and a heavier one.

Her sister made a decision. It was a real decision, made by an adult, with reasons, and those reasons were explained once in a way that did not leave a door in them. There was no dramatic scene. There was a sentence about needing distance and then there was distance, and it turned out that distance was not a phase.

She lies on the bed with her arm over her eyes in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon. She is not crying. She got past crying about it a long time ago and into something quieter and worse, which is the arithmetic she does when she is tired: what is wrong with me, that this could happen and stay happened.

That is the sentence under the sentence. Not: my sister is gone. That one she can say. The one she cannot say is: I must be a person people can walk away from and not miss.

Downstairs somebody puts the kettle on. Her own life, the one that has kept going, is audible through the floor.

You have a phone somewhere. Face down, or in a drawer, or with the notifications turned off for one particular thread. Maybe it is a sister, a son, a father, a friend of twenty years. The decision was theirs, the reasons were theirs, and nobody in this whole world is going to stand over you and promise you that it changes. I am not going to do it either. What I am going to do is tell you what is written about your name. You are engraved somewhere no decision can reach, and it is not a screen. Isaiah 49:16 says God has cut a person's name into the palms of His hands, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a felt fact and not a nice sentence, on a Tuesday afternoon, on a bed, with the phone face down.

Engraved is not written in pencil

Look at where this verse sits, because the context is the whole point.

Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16

The verse before it is a city saying, God has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me. That is the complaint God is answering. Not a theoretical worry. A people saying out loud that they have been dropped. And His answer is not an explanation and it is not a rebuke. It is a gesture. He shows them His hands.

Engraved is the word to sit with. Not written. Not noted, not filed, not remembered fondly. Cut in. In the ancient world you carved into a palm or a wrist the name of the thing you could not afford to forget, and it stayed there because the whole point of cutting is that it does not come off with washing. Your name is not in God's contacts list. It is in His skin.

You are held by a God who put your name somewhere permanent, and He did it because a person said He had forgotten them. Isaiah 49:16 is written as an answer to exactly that accusation, and it is the same Spirit who moved the prophet to say it who says it now over a woman lying on a bed in the afternoon.

And the second half of the verse is doing work too. Your walls are continually before me. Walls, in that chapter, are what is broken down. He is not saying He looks at your best day. He is saying the broken part of your life is what is permanently in front of Him. The gap is in His field of vision, always. That is not surveillance. That is a God who does not look away from the exact place where you are damaged.

The one thing this page is not going to do

Here is where a lot of writing about estrangement quietly cheats, and I am not going to do it to you.

It says: God restores. And then it lets a little light in around the edges of the sentence, a hint, a story about somebody's father who called after fifteen years, a suggestion that if you keep your heart soft, you know. Nobody says it outright. Everybody plants it. And then you are back to checking a phone, and the article got to feel hopeful at your expense.

So, plainly: I do not know whether that number ever rings, and neither does anybody else who writes to you about it. Your sister's decision belongs to her and this page is not going to reach across and work on her, and it is not going to tell you to forgive on a schedule or to do anything at all about her. She is not a problem to be dealt with here. She is a person, and she is God's, and the account is not mine and it is not yours.

What I do know is what God restores when the thing itself stays gone. You are being made whole on ground where nothing is being handed back, and that is the honest promise of Scripture and not a smaller version of a bigger one, and it is the Holy Spirit doing it, in a person, at a pace nobody else can see.

Restored is not the same word as replaced. He is not going to hand you a substitute sister and call the account square. There is no swap here, no upgrade, nothing that makes the empty seat stop being empty. Restored means the person who was cut off is given back her own life: her appetite, her nerve, her ability to be in a room without scanning it, the part of her that used to be funny. The loss keeps its exact size. You stop being the size of the loss.

And your anger about it can stay too. If you are furious, if the fury sits in your jaw for three days after a birthday, that is not a spiritual defect and this page is not going to fix it. You have a God who reads a whole heart and does not require it cleaned up before He works in it, because it is written that He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and His Spirit is not put off by the state of a room He has already moved into.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and there is no surprise in it and there is no door left ajar.

You are going to say the permanent thing out loud. Plainly, in your own voice, with no clause on the end that makes it survivable. My sister has cut me off. It has been four years. It is not changing. Say it like a fact, because it is one, and because a thing said out loud stops running the room from underneath.

And then, in a completely separate sentence that does not argue with the first one, you are going to name one thing God is restoring in you. One. Small. True. I sleep through the night again. I said something funny on Thursday and meant it. I can hear her name now without the floor tipping.

Two sentences. Neither one cancels the other. That is the whole shape of being made whole on this kind of ground. You have both of those sentences in your mouth by right, and holding them together is not denial and it is not despair, because it is written that both the engraving and the broken walls are in front of God at the same time, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a person steady in that exact place.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, with the phone still face down where it is. You are in Christ, and the right to say what is true over your own life was given to you by Him and does not require anybody's participation. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is carrying it. Nothing here dates anything, nothing here predicts a call, and nothing here says a word about what anyone else should do. His timing is His own and whatever He does is His to do. What is written is the person, restored, and that is what you are speaking.

  1. Number that does not ring, you are not the measure of what I am worth. Isaiah 49:16 is written and my name is engraved on the palms of God's hands, so silence on a screen is not the record of me. I am not waiting on you to tell me who I am, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Thought that says I am someone people leave, you are not the truth about me. Scripture says my name is cut into the palms of God's hands and my broken walls are continually before Him, so one person's decision is not a verdict on what I am. I am held, and I am being made whole while the phone stays quiet.
  3. Father, my sister's decision stands and I am not asking You to tell me otherwise. Your word says You have engraved me on the palms of Your hands, and Your Spirit is the one making me whole while nothing at all changes on that screen. I am naming the permanent thing out loud today, and then I am naming one thing You are restoring in me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
