Whole AgainMalachi 3:16

The Last One Who Knows the Names

This message is for to be restored as a person while a whole family line stays permanently ended and you are the last one alive who knows the names

It takes four minutes. He knows because he timed it once, and then he was ashamed of himself for timing it, and then he understood exactly why he had done it. He wanted to know how long the whole thing takes now.

Four minutes to say them all. Nine names, and after each one a sentence, because a name without a sentence is only a sound and will not survive being said by somebody who never met them.

The photograph is propped against the base of the lamp because the frame broke years ago and he never replaced it. Nine people on a step in front of a house, squinting, arranged the way people used to be arranged for photographs, tallest at the back. The village is not on any map under that name anymore. He was not born yet when the picture was taken. He is in it anyway, in the sense that everybody in that photograph is the reason he exists, and he is the only one left who can say which face goes with which name.

The notebook is a school exercise book with a soft cover, and he writes in it in pencil, and he sharpens the pencil with a knife because he is seventy-eight and that is how he was taught. He writes what he knows. That one could whistle two notes at once and would not teach anybody how. That one was left-handed and hid it. That one was afraid of a particular dog on a particular road and would walk twenty minutes out of her way rather than pass it, and the whole family knew and nobody teased her about it, which he thinks is the single kindest fact he has.

There are no descendants. Not none who lost touch. None. The line does not continue anywhere, and there is nobody to write to, and no archive is coming, and when he dies the nine names stop being known by anybody alive.

That is not self-pity. He is not a self-pitying man. It is arithmetic, and he does it with the same accuracy he brings to everything, and it comes out the same every time.

So on one evening a year he sits in this room and says them out loud, in order, tallest at the back, and it takes four minutes.

You have your own four minutes. Maybe yours is one name and not nine. Maybe yours is a branch that ended, a child who was the last of something, a house nobody will visit, a language nobody in your family speaks now. And you have been told a great many warm things by kind people, and you have quietly noticed that almost every one of them required your loss to be temporary in order to work. You are looking at something that is genuinely permanent, and naming it correctly is not a lack of faith. Malachi 3:16 says God keeps a written record of what is said in front of Him, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been in this room for every one of those four minutes without once asking you to round the number down.

What Malachi actually says God wrote down

Read the verse, and read what it says and what it does not say, because I am not going to make it say more than it does.

Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name.Malachi 3:16

Look at when that happens. It is the end of Malachi. People are saying out loud that serving God is useless, that the arrogant are doing fine and nothing is coming of faithfulness. In the middle of that, some of them talk to each other. Not a revival. A conversation, in a low season, between people who had every reason to stop.

And the text says the Lord paid attention. It says He heard. And then it says something nobody asked Him for: a book was written before Him. Nobody in the scene requested a record. Nobody said, please write this down in case we are forgotten. He did it because that is what He is like. He is a keeper of records by nature, and He was already writing while they were still talking.

Now be exact with me, because exactness is the only kind of comfort worth having here. That verse does not say your nine names are in that book. I do not know that and neither do you, and I will not hand you a sentence I cannot stand behind. What it says is that God writes, that nothing said in His hearing falls out of the world, and that the keeping of memory is His office and not only yours.

And there is one thing standing on that verse that is not a guess at all. On the evening you say them out loud in front of Him, they are said in the hearing of the God who writes down what is said in His hearing. That is not me enlarging the line. That is the line.

You are not the only archive, and you never were, whatever the arithmetic in that room has told you. Malachi 3:16 puts a written record in God's own keeping, that is what the text says, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been paying attention in a study with a broken frame and a soft-covered exercise book for longer than you have been keeping it.

Restored, with the line still ended

Here is the part where I refuse to blink, because this category exists to not blink.

The line is ended. Nothing in this article is going to hint that it is not. There is no surprise coming in the last paragraph, no cousin in another country, no letter, no reversal. Restored is not replaced, and on this page that sentence has teeth: God is not going to hand you a substitute family and call the account settled, and He is not going to undo a thing that is done. If you have been reading carefully, waiting for me to soften it, I am not going to.

And you are still being restored. Both of those sentences are standing in the same room and neither one is being asked to leave.

Because restoration here is not about the line. It is about the man in the chair. The one who has been holding nine names the way you hold a bowl of water with both hands, unable to set it down, unable to scratch his own face, for decades. God restores the person. That is what the word has always meant and it is why it is not a smaller promise than the one you wanted: it is aimed at the only thing in that room that is still alive.

You are the one being restored, and it is happening while the loss stays exactly as permanent as it is. Psalm 147:3 says He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, and it is written of hearts and not of circumstances, and it is the Holy Spirit doing the binding in a seventy-eight year old man who has never once been asked to stop counting.

And if you are angry that it is permanent, be angry. You were left holding this and nobody asked you whether you could carry it, and God has never once required you to be at peace with that before He comes near. Lamentations is five chapters of accusation kept in Scripture on purpose, that is written, and the Spirit who preserved it is not waiting for a better tone from you.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not the turn you have been braced for.

Nobody is going to ask you to make peace with it. Nobody is going to hand you a reason. What you are going to do is say the permanent thing out loud, plainly, in one sentence, with nothing tacked on the end to make it bearable. No but. No at least. No however. Say it the way you would say a fact to a person you trust: this is ended, and it does not resume.

Then stop. Let the silence be as long as it wants to be. That silence is not a failure of faith and it is not you being stuck. It is the correct length of a sentence like that.

And then, separately, one more sentence, about you. Something being restored in the person still in the chair. That you can say the names now without your throat closing. That you slept. That you wrote a page yesterday. Say it in the present tense.

You have both of those sentences and neither one is required to make room for the other. It is written in Malachi 3:16 that God attends to what is said in front of Him, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a sentence with a permanent fact in it just as far as He carries a sentence with hope in it.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak. This authority is not yours because you have held on for decades, though you have; it is yours in Christ, given to you by the One who stood outside a tomb and wept before He did anything else, and who never rushed a single grieving person He met. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes the words live. Speak to what is in the room, and leave the outcome to Him, however He answers, because this article promises nothing about the line and will not start now.

  1. Notebook of names in a drawer, you are not the only place they are kept. It is written that a book of remembrance was written before Him, so I am going to keep writing you carefully and I am going to stop carrying you as if everything depended on my handwriting.
  2. Dread that says they die again when I do, you have no right to stay in this house. In the name of Jesus I am saying the accurate thing instead: the line is ended and I am the one still alive, and God is restoring the one still alive.
  3. Father, You are the God who wrote a book of remembrance without being asked, and You have not required me to pretend anything about what is finished. I thank You that Your word says You pay attention and hear, and that Your Spirit binds up a heart that is still holding a list. I am saying the permanent thing out loud tonight, and I am staying in the room with You afterward.
