Whole AgainPsalm 139:16

The Life I Had Pictured for Him

This message is for to be restored as a person while your son's independence stays permanently out of reach and the life you pictured for him is not the life he has

There is a school photograph on the wall of the front room, in a plain black frame, and it has hung in the same spot through two house moves and one repaint.

He is nine in it. Blue mottled background, the kind every school in the world seems to use. Green uniform sweater. And a grin so wide and so completely unguarded that visitors always comment on it, and Rosalind never gets tired of hearing them.

Emmanuel is twenty-four now. The chair by the window is his, the one with the headrest that has needed adjusting for three weeks, and the sling in the corner is his, and the standing frame that takes up half the room is his. There was an hour in a delivery room where the oxygen did not get where it needed to go, and nobody has ever been able to tell her exactly how long that hour was, and everything since has been downstream of it.

She is good at this. Twenty-four years good. She knows the seating clinic waiting list, the funding cycle, the name of every one of his aides and which two are worth keeping. She has a laminated sheet on the fridge and a tone of voice for the phone that gets results.

She loves him. Fiercely, and with her whole life, and without one single reservation. Write that down, because everything else I am about to say sits on top of it.

And there is another picture, and it has never been on any wall.

She made it in the eighth month, in a chair by a window in a different house. He was at a kitchen table in that one, about twenty-two, with a set of keys on the table and a job he complained about and a girl she was not sure about yet. He was tall in it. He was arguing with her about something unimportant, cheerfully, the way sons do.

She has never once said out loud that she still grieves that picture.

Not to her husband. Not to her sister. Not to the counselor she saw twice, seven years ago. Because she knows exactly what it would sound like, and she is not willing to have anybody in this world think, even for one second, that she wishes she had a different son.

So the picture stays where it is, folded up somewhere behind her ribs, and it aches on the days it aches, usually with no warning, usually over nothing. A photo on somebody else's social feed. A boy in a parking lot laughing with his mother.

If you have a picture like that, and you have never said it out loud to a living soul, then sit down here with me, because I am not going to make you defend yourself. You are a mother carrying love and grief in the same set of hands, and Psalm 139:16 says every one of his days was written in a book before there was anything to look at, and the Holy Spirit has been holding both of those pictures with you the entire twenty-four years.

What the verse actually says, and what it does not

Here is the anchor for this whole page, in the old English, exactly as it stands.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.Psalm 139:16

Two notes of honesty before I teach it, because you have had enough people be inspiring at you.

First, the word unperfect in that older English means unfinished, not faulty. It is describing an unformed thing, the way clay is unformed. It is not a comment on anybody's body and it is not a comment on your son.

Second, translations differ on what is written in that book. This one says his members. Many others render it as the days appointed for him. That difference is real and I am not going to hide it from you. But notice that both readings say the identical thing about God, which is the thing you actually came here for. It was written down before there was a single thing to look at.

Now, the part I will not do. I am not going to tell you that God arranged what happened in that delivery room. Scripture does not say that to you, I am not going to put it in His mouth, and any comfort built on a sentence God did not say collapses at exactly the moment you need it to hold.

What the verse says is that He saw. Before there was anything visible, before the first cell divided, His eyes were on it and His hand was writing. Which means there has never been a day of your son's life that arrived unrecorded, unnoticed, or unwanted. Not one. Not the hardest one.

You are the mother of a son whose every day is written down in the book of God, and Psalm 139:16 says that writing was done before there was anything at all to look at, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping that page open through every appointment and every night.

There is no discarded draft anywhere in this. There is no version of Emmanuel that God intended and then had to settle for.

Two pictures, and neither one is a crime

Now the other half, and this is the part almost nobody will say to you plainly.

You are allowed to grieve the picture. Grieving what you imagined is not a vote against what you have. They are not on the same ballot. Grief is love that has nowhere left to put itself, and the reason that particular grief hurts so specifically is that you loved a boy you had already met in your mind and you have never been permitted to say goodbye to him properly.

Guilt is what grief becomes when somebody makes it illegal. And that is what happened to you, not by anyone's cruelty, but by twenty-four years of correctly reading the room. You knew what saying it would cost, so you never said it, and unsaid grief does not evaporate. It just changes into something heavier that you carry around and call being tired.

So let me be exact about what this site says and what it does not. God restores. He does not replace. He is not going to hand you the kitchen table picture back with a different ending printed on it, and I am not going to end this page with a turn where I hint that He might. If you have been reading this waiting for the paragraph where the writer flinches and starts promising things, it is not coming. Not here.

What He restores is the person the loss happened to, and in this room, that person is you.

You are being restored in a house where nothing about his body has changed, and it is written in Psalm 139:16 that the God who wrote the book is the God who is still doing the fashioning, and the Holy Spirit is doing that work in you right now without waiting for one thing about your circumstances to move.

Your son is not the project. He is a man with a name and a grin that visitors comment on. You are the one who has been standing in the gap for twenty-four years without ever being handed a place to put the second picture, and that is what is being attended to.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a reversal. Nothing about your son's independence is going to be different when you finish this page, and I am not going to insult you by implying otherwise.

The turn is this. The sentence you have never said out loud is going to get said out loud, once, in your own voice, in your own front room. Not to explain yourself. Not to anybody who has to react to it.

Because a loss that has never been named has never been mourned, and a grief that has never been mourned does not stay grief. It turns into guilt, and guilt is the version that eats you, and you have been eating it for a very long time in the dark while everybody praised you for how well you cope.

Say the permanent thing plainly. Not the softened version. The real one, in the words you actually think it in.

And then, because you are not going to leave yourself standing in a sentence like that alone, you are going to say the second one. One thing that is being restored in you. Not in him. In you. Something that is actually true, that was not true two years ago.

You have the right to say the whole hard sentence in the open, because His word in Psalm 62:8 tells you to pour out your heart before Him and calls Him a refuge in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is in that front room and He is not going to be shocked by anything you are about to say.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Picture I made in the eighth month, you are not the life he has, and I am finished pretending otherwise. Psalm 139:16 says every day was written in His book before there was anything at all to look at, and my son's days are in that book. In the name of Jesus I am putting you down.
  2. Guilt that calls my grief a betrayal, you are lying about a mother who has never once stopped showing up. It is written in Psalm 56:8 that He puts my tears in His bottle and counts what nobody else counted, and His Spirit has been holding my love and my grief in the same hands the whole time. I am a woman who loves her son and mourns a picture, and both of those are honest.
  3. Father, You saw him before there was anything to see, and You wrote his days down Yourself. Your word says the book was written when as yet there was none of them, and Your Spirit is restoring me in a house where nothing about his body has changed. I am naming what is permanent out loud, and I am staying.
