The inks are still on the shelf above the bench in the order his father put them in, and nobody has moved one of them in four years.
He was six when he was first allowed to hold the ruling pen. Not to use it. To hold it, and to be shown how it sits, and to have his fingers arranged around it by a much larger hand that smelled of turpentine and cardamom. His father lettered shop fronts for thirty-one years. Gold on black over the fruit sellers, a long clean line under the name, the little swelling at the start of a stroke that you only ever get from a wrist that has stopped thinking about it.
The wrist takes eleven years to stop thinking about it. His stopped at twenty-six. By thirty he was doing wedding boards and the odd restaurant window and he was, and he knew he was, better than his father had been at the same age, which is the only inheritance a craftsman actually wants.
The accident was not dramatic. That is worth saying, because people expect a story and there is not one. A fall, a bad landing on an outstretched arm, a fracture that healed and a nerve underneath it that did not. Two surgeries. A great deal of physical therapy that he did faithfully, every day, for two years, because he is that kind of man. The last consultant was honest with him and he has since decided that was a mercy: this is what you have now.
What he has now is a right hand that grips a shopping bag and buttons a shirt on a good morning and cannot, under any circumstances, hold a line. Not a wobbly line. No line. The pen goes down and something in the forearm gives a small, private lurch, and the stroke dies about an inch in.
He can still see it. That is the thing nobody understands. He knows exactly what a letter should do, he can see the whole board finished in his head before a single mark is on it, and there is a wall of glass between the seeing and the hand.
He has an apprentice now. She is nineteen and she is quick and she does what he tells her, and last month she pulled a stroke off a board that made the back of his neck go cold, and he was proud of her and something in him went down like a stone at the same time.
And people keep telling him to wait for it. That is the sentence. Wait for it. God is not finished. Watch what happens. They say it with love and he cannot say anything back, because what he wants to say is: I have waited four years and I have done every exercise and this is what I have now, and I need somebody to be able to hear that sentence without immediately arguing with it.
You have that hand, or its equivalent. You are permitted to say the permanent thing out loud without it being unbelief, and 2 Corinthians 4:7 calls the vessel earthen without a single word of apology for the word earthen, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been holding the treasure in that vessel the whole four years. I am not going to hint at a surprise ending. There is not going to be one in this message.
Paul knew what the jar was made of
This is the verse, and I want you to notice that it is not a comfort about the future.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.2 Corinthians 4:7
Earthen. Baked clay. The cheapest container in the ancient world, the one you used because it did not matter if it broke, the one nobody would have carried anything valuable in. Paul is describing himself and the men with him, and he chooses the least flattering material on the shelf, and he does not soften it and he does not put a promise after it.
Read on a little and he gets more specific, not less. Troubled on every side. Perplexed. Persecuted. Cast down. And then, a few lines later, the sentence that does the actual work: though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
Perish. Not paused. Not tested for a season and then handed back. Paul says the outward man is going down, present tense, ongoing, and in the very same sentence says something else is being renewed daily, and he holds those two together without flinching and without resolving them.
That is the shape of the whole thing, and almost nobody preaches it, because it is the harder half. The vessel does not get mended in the passage. The crack is not repaired at the end of the chapter. What Paul says is that the crack is where the light gets out, and that the excellency of the power being visibly not his is the entire point of putting the treasure in clay in the first place.
You are a vessel with a treasure in it right now, and Scripture says the excellency of the power is of God and not of us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it there and the one who keeps it there in a body that is not what it was.
Whole is not the same word as mended
Now let me be as plain as that consultant was, because plainness is what a person in this room has earned.
The hand is not coming back. I am not saying that as a prophecy and I am not saying it as a limit on God, who is not limited by anything and never asked me to speak for what He does. I am saying it because you already know it, and because a message that will not say it out loud with you is a message you cannot trust with anything else. Some things do not come back. Scripture is full of people they did not come back for.
And restored, in the Book, has never once meant replaced. That is the sentence this whole site stands on. Replaced would mean the nerve regrown and the four years handed back and the apprentice unnecessary. Restored means a man put back into working order around a loss that stays a loss. Whole is not mended. Whole means all of you is present and accounted for and nothing of you is being held in reserve until the hand works, which it is not going to.
Think about what has been on hold in you for four years. Not the craft. The man. There is a version of you that has been standing in the hallway with his coat on, waiting to be allowed back into his own life once the repair comes through. That is what is being restored, and it is not a consolation for the hand and I would never call it that. It is a separate and larger thing, and it has been available the entire time.
You have a wholeness that was never routed through your right hand, and it is written that the inward man is renewed day by day while the outward man goes the other way, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that renewing in you daily, hand or no hand.
So the moment is here, and it is not on the far side of a return of function, and I want to say clearly that I am not hinting at one. No surprise is being set up in the last paragraph of this. The consultant was honest with you and so am I.
You are being made whole in the body you have, and it is written that the excellency of the power is of God and not of us, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that out in a man at a bench with the inks still in his father's order. Wholeness was never a report on your nerves. It is a person fully occupied, fully here, not on hold.
And what God does about anything else is entirely His. I am not forecasting a shape and I am not putting a date on His floor. He restores the person first and always, and whatever He does beyond that is His to decide and not mine to promise you.
If any of this has gone somewhere darker than a workbench, if the arithmetic has ever included not being here, then the message stops and a person starts. In the United States, call or text 988, any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one human being who knows your name. Say it to somebody real today.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the bench if you can. The standing to say them was given to you when Christ took you as His own, and it is His authority you carry into a workshop, not yours. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them. The mountain here is the verdict that a man with one working hand is a part of a man. Speak to that. Then speak to God about the man with the inks in his father's order, and His timing is His own, and what He does with a nerve is His to decide and not mine to forecast.
- Right hand that will not hold the pen, you are not the measure of me. 2 Corinthians 4:7 calls the vessel earthen and does not apologize for it, and it is written that the excellency of the power is of God and not of us.
- Verdict that I am half a man now, you are overruled in the name of Jesus. I am wholly present at this bench and nothing of me is being kept back until a nerve changes its mind, Scripture says the inward man is renewed day by day while the outward man goes the other way, and His Spirit is doing that renewing in me today.
- Father, You are the One who chose clay on purpose so the power would plainly not be mine. I thank You, because Your word says the treasure is in the jar as it is and Your Spirit is holding it there, and I am saying the permanent thing out loud and then saying what You are restoring, in that order.
2 Corinthians 4:7
