The Bike in the Garage

The chain has gone stiff. He noticed that in the spring and did nothing about it, and then in the fall he noticed it again.

Everything else in the garage has moved at least once. He reorganized the whole back wall two winters ago, put up pegboard, hung the rakes by size, threw out a decade of paint cans that had skinned over. He is a tidy man and the garage shows it. And in the corner by the deep freeze, in exactly the place it has been, there is a small blue bicycle leaning against the wall with one training wheel on it.

One. They had taken the other one off in June, on the grass beside the driveway, with the neighbor's dog going out of his mind at the fence, and the plan had been to take the second one off in a week or two when the wobble settled.

There is a helmet hooked over the handlebar with a dinosaur sticker on the side, half peeled, the way a six year old peels a sticker: enthusiastically, and then bored. And there is a chalk square on the concrete floor, mostly gone now, that he drew himself so the boy would know where to park it. You can still see two of the corners if the door is up and the light is coming in low.

His wife asked him once, gently, in the first year, and he said not yet, and she has not asked again, and he loves her for that more than he knows how to say. A man down the street asked whether they might want to pass it on to his nephew. He said no. He said it too fast and the man's face did that thing, and he has thought about that exchange probably four hundred times.

He is not standing in the garage because he thinks the bike is going to be ridden.

He is standing in the garage because it is the only room in the house where he is not required to be doing better. Everywhere else there is a schedule other people are holding him to. Church has one. His brother has one. Even the grief group, God bless them, has a shape they expect a man to move through. Out here there is a stiff chain and a chalk square and nobody expects anything.

And underneath it is the thing he has never said, which is that people keep telling him God restores, and he cannot make that sentence mean anything, because there is exactly one thing he wants and it is not on offer, and every promise that does not include it sounds to him like a man being handed a coat when his house has burned down.

You are standing in your own garage. Maybe it is a room, a drawer you do not open, a coat on a hook, a name in your contacts you have not deleted and will not. And you have heard restoration talked about, and you have done the arithmetic, and you know that the one thing is not coming back, and you have quietly decided that this whole subject is for other people with reversible problems. You are not disqualified from a single thing God does by the fact that your loss is permanent. It is written in Isaiah 66:13 that God comforts, and comfort is the word you use about what cannot be undone, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been standing in that corner by the deep freeze with you every evening you went out there for no reason you could explain.

Why the promise is comfort and not repair

Here is the line, and I want you to notice which verb God chose, because He chose it on purpose and it is not the one people quote at you.

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.Isaiah 66:13

Comfort. Not undo. Not reverse. Not replace. Comfort.

Think about what that word is for. Nobody comforts a man about a thing that is about to be fixed. If it can be fixed, you fix it, and the comfort is unnecessary and slightly insulting. Comfort exists as a category precisely because some things stay. A mother does not comfort a child by promising the afternoon back. She comes and she sits and she holds, and the afternoon is still gone, and the child is different by morning even though nothing about the afternoon changed.

That is God choosing, deliberately, the word that admits the situation. He did not write a verse that talks around your garage. He wrote one that assumes it.

And He put Himself in the tenderest role in the language. Not as one who explains. Not as one who instructs. As one whom his mother comforts. That is the closest, most physical, least verbal comfort there is, and it is the picture God reached for when He described what He does with people whose losses do not move.

You are held by a God who chose the word comfort with His eyes open, and He is not standing outside your garage waiting for you to be over it. That is Isaiah 66:13 in plain sight, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Comforter for exactly this reason, which is not a coincidence and not a poetic flourish.

One thing before I go on, because I have sat in rooms like yours. Do not do this only on a page. Say the hard sentences to a living person this week, somebody who will not flinch and will not fix. A garage is a good place to think and a bad place to live.

What is actually being restored, and what is not

Now the honest part, and I am not going to soften it in the last paragraph, or the second to last one, or anywhere.

Your son is not coming back. I am not going to hint at anything else. There is no surprise coming in the ninth paragraph of this article, no turn where I tell you what God might do, no carefully worded sentence designed to leave a door cracked so you keep reading. He is gone. That is the fact this whole page is written on top of, and everything I am about to say has to survive it or it is not worth saying.

Restored is not replaced. A son cannot be replaced, and God has never once offered to. Restoration is not a swap and it is not a compensation and it is not a settlement where heaven pays out and everybody agrees to be square. If that is what the word meant, the word would be an obscenity in a garage like yours.

Here is what it does mean. Restore is what God does to a person: He puts back into a man what was taken out of him. And a great deal was taken out of you that was not your son. Your ability to be in a room. Your sleep. The part of you that could enjoy a Saturday without immediately paying for it. Your nerve. Your appetite. Your voice in a prayer. Those are yours, they were emptied out of you, and they are what He is restoring, and every one of them can be restored without one single thing changing about the bike against that wall.

That is not a smaller gift than you thought. It is a different one, and it is the only honest one, and it is real.

You have a restoration that does not depend on a reversal, which is the only kind that would be any use to you. It is written in Isaiah 66:13 that the comfort comes as a mother's comfort comes, given and not earned, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that work in a man at His own pace, out in a garage, with the chain still stiff.

And your anger is not a problem to be managed here. If you are furious, be furious. Nothing in this page asks you to be gentler about it than you are.
