The lobby carpet is the color they choose so you cannot see what gets spilled on it. There is a coffee station with the little wooden stirrers, and a table of name badges in alphabetical trays, and the low roar four hundred people make when none of them are saying anything important yet.
She is holding the program because they hand you one at the door.
Room 2B, eleven fifteen. And there is the title of the session, and the title is her sentence. Not a similar sentence. Hers, the one she wrote at a kitchen table with a cold cup of tea beside her, the one she rewrote nine times until it did the thing it needed to do, the one that ended up on the cover of the pilot binder. It is printed in the program under a name that is not hers, and there is a small photograph beside the name, and the photograph is smiling.
Ten years. She built the framework. She ran the trials in three districts and drove the mileage and sat in the church basements with the parents. She wrote the training deck and the objection handling and the part in the middle that everybody says is the good part. And somewhere in the middle of the tenth year the whole thing went out into the world with somebody else's name on the front, and there was a reason given, and the reason was reasonable, and by the time she understood what had happened it was already the way everybody in the field described it.
She stands in the lobby with the program open. Somebody bumps her elbow and says sorry. She says no problem.
And here is the thing she has never said out loud, the one that is heavier than the credit: somewhere in the ninth year she stopped arguing, and she decided something about herself. She decided that the work must not have been that good, or it could not have been taken so easily. She decided that she is the kind of person these things happen to. She has carried that verdict around for years now, and it has been quietly running her decisions, and it costs her more every month than the byline ever did.
You have a program in your hand too. Maybe it is a byline, a patent, a company, a recipe, a house you built with a brother-in-law, a decade of care nobody logged. It went out under a name that was not yours, and the taking was not an accident and it was not your doing. Somebody made choices and you paid for them. You are not the reason it happened, and you were never the reason it happened. It is written in Hebrews 6:10 that God is not unjust so as to overlook work done in love, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping that record the whole way through, in the years when nobody else was keeping it and you had stopped.
God is not unjust
Here is the verse, and read it slowly, because the sentence is built strangely on purpose.
For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.Hebrews 6:10
He does not say God is generous. He says God is not unjust. That is the writer reaching for the strongest available floor, the way you say of a bridge, it is not going to fall. He is answering people who had lost property and standing and years, and the comfort he hands them is not a prediction about their circumstances. It is a statement about the character of the One keeping the books.
And notice what is on the record. Not the outcome. Not the credit line. Your work, and the love behind the work. Both are entered. The mileage in three districts is on it. The church basements are on it. The nine rewrites at the kitchen table are on it. Nothing about that entry depends on whose photograph is printed beside the session title.
You have a record in the only ledger that finally settles anything, and no printed program overwrites it. Hebrews 6:10 puts it there in writing, not as encouragement but as a fact about God's justice, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been the witness in the room for every hour that went unrecorded anywhere else.
And I am not going to tell you what should happen to anybody. The account is God's, not yours to collect and not mine to hand you. Scripture does not put the reader in charge of the reckoning, and the moment a page like this starts building a case, it has stopped ministering to you and started using you.
The verdict you reached on the way
Here is the part that actually has to come off you, and it is not the credit.
Somewhere in the middle of it you reached a verdict about yourself. It was reasonable at the time. When a thing is taken and nothing happens, a mind goes looking for an explanation, and the fastest available explanation is always the one that blames the person doing the thinking. It must not have been that good. I must be easy to move around. I am the sort of person this happens to.
That verdict is not a fact. It is a conclusion you drew under pressure with incomplete information, and it has been given ten years of authority it never earned. The taking was one loss. The verdict has been a second one, running quietly every month since, deciding which rooms you speak in and which sentences you finish.
You are not obliged to keep carrying a verdict you reached in the worst year of it. Hebrews 6:10 says the work and the love are both remembered by God, which is a different assessment of your decade than the one you made about yourself, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the slow work of separating what was actually taken from what you concluded while it was going.
And be clear what restoration means on this ground, because it is not what a lawyer would mean. God is not handing you a photocopy of that decade with your name typed on the front. Restored is not the same word as replaced. A replaced decade would be an identical thing with the labeling corrected, and nobody is offering you that. Restored means the person who did the work is given back to herself: her judgment, her nerve, her willingness to write the next sentence at the next kitchen table. That is the harder thing and it is the one He does.
Your anger about it stands, by the way. It is not being processed here or reframed as a gift. Anger is what a person feels when something is taken, and it is not a sign that anything is wrong with your faith.
So here is the turn, and it is not that anybody prints a correction.
You are going to say two facts out loud, and then you are going to stop. What was taken. Whose it was. Say them plainly, using the real words, in your own voice, and then say nothing at all about what should happen to anyone. Not one syllable in that direction. That part is not yours to carry and it never was, and the relief in laying it down is bigger than you are expecting.
What you are doing is separating the loss from the verdict. The loss is real and it is entered in a ledger you did not have to keep. The verdict was yours, reached under pressure, and it is the one thing in this whole story you have the authority to overturn.
This is yours to put down, the verdict and not the memory, and putting it down changes nothing about what happened and everything about who is carrying it. Hebrews 6:10 is the ground under that, because God's assessment of your work is already written and it is not the one you made about yourself, and it is the same Spirit who inspired that sentence who is able to lift a ten year old conclusion off a person in an afternoon.
Declare this over yourself
Now speak, with the program still open in your hand. You are in Christ, and the standing to say what is true over your own decade was given to you by Him, not issued by a conference committee. Scripture is under every one of these lines and the Holy Spirit carries them. Nothing here dates anything, nothing here predicts a correction, and nothing here aims a word at another human being. His timing is His own and whatever He does with the account belongs to Him. What is written is the person, restored, and that is what you are speaking.
- Program in my hand, you are not the ledger God keeps. Hebrews 6:10 is written and God is not unjust so as to overlook a person's work, so the ten years stand on His record whatever is printed on yours. I am handing the account to Him, in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict I reached about my own worth, you are not mine to keep carrying. Scripture says God remembers the work and the love behind it, and His remembering and not a printed credit is what settles what my decade was. I am putting you down, and I am the one who did the work.
- Father, You saw every hour of those ten years and You have not misfiled a single one of them. Your word says You are not unjust to overlook work done in love, and Your Spirit is the one keeping that account so that I do not have to keep it. I am naming out loud what was taken and whose it was, and then I am leaving the reckoning exactly where it belongs, with You.
