He Gives BackPsalm 34:5

It Was Never Mine to Carry

This message is for to hold the years another adult's choices took out of a girlhood, without carrying the shame as though a child could have stopped any of it

She has the key to the basement, which is how these things start. Somebody needed the chairs set out on Thursdays and she said she would, and that was four years ago, and now the key lives on her ring between the car and the mailbox.

The room smells like coffee and floor wax and old hymnals stacked in the corner since a renovation nobody finished. The chairs do not match. Six are the stackable gray ones from upstairs, four are wooden with the varnish gone off the arms, and one is a wingback somebody's mother died and left, which everybody fights over politely. She sets them in a circle, wide enough that nobody has to look straight at anybody. She has learned that much.

She is forty-four. She is not in the group. She unlocks, she sets up, she starts the urn, and she goes home before the first person arrives, and if you asked her why she would tell you about the parking and mean it.

Here is what she is actually doing down there, and she has never once said it out loud in that room.

When she was nine there was a winter she wore a grown woman's coat to school. Wool, dark green, three sizes past her, sleeves she had to hold back in fistfuls to write. There was a reason and the reason was an adult's, and she knew even at nine not to explain it. The other children noticed the way children do, quickly and permanently. The adults noticed the way adults do, which is to say they looked and then looked at something else.

She got a coat that fit the following year. She has never once been out of the other one.

That is what she cannot say in a circle of mismatched chairs. Not the winter. The thirty-five years of walking through the world in something that was never hers, that everybody could see, that she could not take off, that she did not choose and did not cause and could not have stopped, because she was nine. And she is the one who has been carrying it ever since, while the person whose coat it actually was has never once had to hold a sleeve back to sign anything.

Somewhere in there she started thinking the shape of the coat was her shape.

You know this coat. Yours may not have been wool. It may have been a house you kept quiet, or a schedule you managed at eleven that no eleven year old should be managing, or a secret you were handed and told to hold, or a decade of moves and new schools and never saying the true answer when a teacher asked. You were a child, and the years another adult's choices took out of your girlhood were taken and not given. Psalm 34:5 says the ones who look to Him are radiant and their faces are not ashamed, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been standing next to you in every basement, waiting for you to look up.

Shame that came in under your name

There are two kinds of shame and almost nobody separates them, and the whole of your life since that winter has been made harder by the confusion.

One kind comes from something a person actually did. Scripture is full of it, and it has a road home, and the road is well marked and short and God walks it with people every single day.

The other kind was handed to you. It came in on somebody else's account and got written under your name, and it does not respond to any of the treatment the first kind responds to, because it was never on your account to begin with. You can confess every sin you have ever committed, honestly and thoroughly, and stand up from that prayer still wearing the coat. Not because the prayer failed. Because you were praying about your own account and the coat was never on it, and the Holy Spirit, who searches everything, has never once confused the two.

Now hear the verse, and hear where it puts its attention.

Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.Psalm 34:5

David does not say they were argued out of the shame. He does not say somebody proved to them that they were innocent. He says they looked, and their faces changed. Shame is a physical posture before it is anything else: the chin comes down, the eyes go to the floor, the shoulders come forward around the chest like a coat being held closed. The whole body of it points down. And the verse answers with a direction, not an argument.

You have a face that was made to be lifted, and it is not being lifted on a technicality. His word says the ones who look to Him are radiant, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the lifting, at the pace of a person who has been looking at the floor since she was nine.

And I will not spend one sentence of this article asking what you might have done differently. There is no version of you at nine who could have stopped an adult, and the question itself is another sleeve to hold back. You did not cause it. You did not invite it. You were small and it happened over your head.

Restored is not the same word as replaced

This category is called He Gives Back, and I want to be exact about what is being given, because vagueness here is a cruelty.

Restored is not the same word as replaced. He is not handing you back the winter. There is no arrangement under heaven in which you are nine again in a coat that fits, and if anybody has implied otherwise to you, they were reaching for something kind and they overreached. God does not un-happen a childhood. Scripture says He restores the person, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that work in a woman and never in a calendar.

What He gives back is the face. Not a decade. A face that is not held down, in a room with people in it, on an ordinary Thursday. And that is smaller than what you wanted at nineteen and it is far bigger than what you have been living on. Getting the years back would leave you exactly the woman the coat made, holding a girlhood you no longer know how to be. Being restored gives you back yourself: the chin, the eye contact, the ability to sit in the circle instead of setting it out and leaving.

You have a name that is your own, and the shame that arrived under it does not get to keep the title. It is written in Psalm 34:5 that the looking is what changes the face, and the same Spirit who moved David to write that line is the one moving on you right now, while you are reading in whatever room you are in.

Two more things, and then I will stop talking and we will do something.

I am not going to tell you to forgive anybody today. That word gets swung at women in your position like a lever, usually by people who want the room comfortable again, and I am not going to be one more voice using it on you. What happens between you and that door is between you and God and it is not on my schedule.

And I am not going to name one single thing for you to do about anyone. Not a conversation, not a confrontation, not a case. The account is not in your hands and it never was, and Scripture puts it in God's, and He is neither careless with it nor slow in a way that means He forgot. Your anger about it is not the problem here. Anger is what a person feels when something was taken, and it is the correct feeling, and nobody on this page is going to correct it out of you.

The breakthrough

So here is what happens in the basement, and it is not that anybody gives you the winter back.

You are going to say two things out loud, in that order, and then you are going to stop, and the stopping is half the point. First: name what was taken. Not the whole story, not the explanation, not the context that makes it acceptable to say. The thing. Second: say that it was yours. Those were my years. That was my ninth winter. That was my girlhood.

And then nothing. Say nothing about anybody else. Not their name, not what they did, not what should become of them, because the second you reach for that, you have picked the coat back up and put it on to go and argue in. The account is God's and He has never once mislaid one. You are free to say the true thing and then say nothing further, and it is not weakness. It is written in Psalm 34:5 that the lifting comes from looking at Him and not from settling anything with anyone, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding you up while your mouth does the two hardest sentences of the year.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, standing, with the chin up. You are in Christ, and the right to say what is true over your own name was given to you by Him and was never something you had to earn by getting over anything, so nothing here rests on how you feel this morning. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it. And the account belongs to Him: nothing here dates anything, nothing here tells you what to do about anybody, and nothing here promises you back one hour of that winter. What is promised is you, restored, and it was written down long before you had that key on your ring.

  1. Coat that was never mine, you do not belong on my shoulders and you never did. It is written in Psalm 34:5 that the ones who look to Him are radiant and their faces are not ashamed, so I am taking you off in front of the God who saw me put you on.
  2. Shame that was handed to me, you have no right to stay on my face. I was a child and I did not cause it and I could not have stopped it; in the name of Jesus I am done wearing what belonged to somebody else, and Scripture is what I am standing on and not my own strength.
  3. Father, You saw the winter and You saw the sleeves and You have never once mistaken whose that coat was. I thank You that Your word says the ones who look to You are radiant, and that Your Spirit is the one lifting a chin that has been down since I was nine. Today I am naming what was taken, saying out loud that it was mine, and leaving the whole account in Your hands.
