The Word They Meant Was Reunited

The prayer meeting ended twenty minutes ago and nobody has left. This is the real meeting, the one in the foyer, with the urn still plugged in and the folding chairs going back onto the rack four at a time and somebody's toddler running the length of the carpet with one shoe.

She has a paper cup she does not want. She is standing near the noticeboard because standing near the noticeboard gives a person something to look at.

Ruth from the second row comes over and takes her hand in both of hers, the way Ruth does, and says: I am believing for full restoration. I really am. God restores. And then she squeezes, once, and looks at her with such warmth that it would take a harder woman than this one to say anything back but thank you.

And she does say thank you. She means it, too. Ruth prayed for her mother through a whole winter and drove her to appointments and never once made it about herself, and there is not a mean bone in the woman.

But she walks out to the parking lot afterward and sits in the car without starting it, and here is the sentence she cannot say inside that building: the word Ruth means when she says restoration is reunited. Everyone means that. When they pray restore, they are picturing a front door, and him walking through it, and a photograph at some anniversary with everybody crying. That is the picture. Nobody has said it out loud in eleven months and everybody is praying it.

He is not coming back. That is not despair talking and it is not a lack of faith, it is a fact with a legal document behind it and a new address and a life that has continued and does not include her. She knows it the way you know the weather. And every single time somebody prays the good word over her, something in her chest goes tight, because she has to hold two things at once now: their kindness, and the fact that they are praying for a thing she is not waiting for.

You know that tightness. Maybe yours is a marriage and maybe it is a business, a body, a church, a family table with a chair that stays empty. Somebody who loves you keeps praying a word over you, and the word is a good word, and inside their mouth it means one particular outcome, and that outcome is not on the table. And you cannot correct them without sounding like you have given up, so you say thank you and you go sit in a car. You are not faithless for knowing what is true, and you are not being asked to pretend otherwise. It is written in Isaiah 55:8 that God's thoughts are not our thoughts, which means the picture in the room is not automatically the plan, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the volume of anybody's hope, who tells a person what God is actually doing.

Two good words that are not the same word

Here is the verse, and it is not the scolding it gets used as.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.Isaiah 55:8

That line is usually deployed to shut a hurting person up. Do not use it that way and do not receive it that way. Read where it sits: God has just said He will abundantly pardon, and the objection He is answering is a person who cannot believe the pardon is that wide. His thoughts being higher is not a shrug. It is Him saying, your imagination for what I do is smaller than what I am doing.

Which cuts in a direction nobody expects in a church foyer. If His thoughts are higher than ours, then the picture everybody in that circle is holding, the front door and the anniversary photograph, is also a human-sized picture. Kind, sincere, and human-sized. You have a God whose plans are not limited to the outcome the room agreed on, and that is what Isaiah 55:8 is written to say, and it is the Holy Spirit who is able to widen a person's imagination without lying to them about the facts.

Now say the two words next to each other and hear that they are different. Reunited means the two come back together. Restored means the thing is made whole. In English we have let them blur because in most stories they arrive together, and when they do it is a beautiful thing and nobody here is against it. But they are not one word. A marriage can be reunited and not restored, and every counselor alive has seen it. And a person can be restored while the marriage stays gone.

Nobody in that foyer was being cruel. They reached for the biggest word they had. That is worth honoring, not correcting in public.

Restored is not replaced and it is not reunited either

Here is the honest heart of it, and it is going to stay honest all the way to the end of this page.

Restored is not the same word as replaced. God is not offering you a copy of the marriage with a different man's face in it, and anybody who frames the next thing as an upgrade has not understood what was buried. And restored is not the same word as reunited, either. He is not obliged to bring the front door back in order to be doing something real, and He is not doing nothing simply because the door stays shut.

What He restores first, and what the whole Bible describes Him restoring most often, is the person. Someone able to sleep. Someone whose hands stop shaking in the grocery store. Someone who can hear a hymn about faithfulness without walking out. Someone who tells the truth again instead of managing everybody's face. That work is not a consolation prize handed out because the real prize was unavailable. You are the thing God is restoring, and that is written into the promise itself and not tacked on underneath it. Isaiah 55 is a chapter about a word going out of God's mouth that does not come back empty, and it is the same Spirit who carries that word who is doing the slow work in you right now, whatever the front door does.

And your anger about the difference is allowed to stand. If it makes you furious that people can pray for a thing you cannot want anymore, that fury is not a spiritual problem to be fixed before God will work. It is what happens to a person who has been handed a word with somebody else's meaning inside it. You are permitted to bring the whole of that to God without cleaning it up first, because Scripture is full of people who did exactly that and He kept every one of their sentences, and the Holy Spirit is not startled by the tone of a prayer He has been listening to for eleven months.
