Truly RestoredPsalm 34:18

The Chair They Want to Fill

This message is for honesty about restoration when people talk about it as though somebody new simply takes the place of the one you buried

There are four chairs at the kitchen table and three of them are pulled out.

He does that himself, every morning, without thinking about it. Pulls out his own, pulls out the one his son sits in when he comes by on Saturdays, pulls out the one the grandkids fight over. And leaves the fourth one pushed in, squared up to the table with the seat under the edge, the way she used to leave it when she wiped down the top.

Thirty eight years she sat there. She had the chair with the wobble, which she would not let him fix because she said she was used to the wobble, and she had a spot on the table where she set her mug down so many times the finish went dull in a ring. He can find that ring in the dark.

His daughter in law is kind. That is what makes this hard to say out loud. She is the kindest woman he knows and she brings soup on Tuesdays and she stayed all through the last of it and never once looked at her phone in that hospital room. And two Tuesdays ago she said, standing right there at the counter with the lid in her hand, that there is a widow in the choir, a lovely person, and that God restores, and that He does not leave a man alone forever.

She meant every word of it as a gift. She was trying to hand him hope in the only container she had.

And he stood there and nodded and said something about the soup, and after her car pulled out he sat down in his own chair and looked at the one that was still pushed in, and thought the sentence he has not said to a living soul: they think restored means somebody else in that chair.

He is not angry with her. He is not even sure she is wrong about the future, whatever the future turns out to be. What he cannot get past is the arithmetic underneath it, the quiet suggestion that a person is a position, and that a position can be filled, and that once it is filled the ledger comes out even and everybody can stop being careful around him at coffee hour.

Thirty eight years is not a position. It is a woman who would not let him fix a wobble.

You have a chair. Maybe it is at a table and maybe it is a seat in a car, or a name that used to be first in your phone, or one side of a bed you still do not sleep in the middle of. And somebody who loves you, somebody who showed up when it counted, has told you that God restores, and you heard what they meant by it, and you could not tell them that the sentence landed like a swap. You are not being asked to pretend a person is a slot. It is written in Psalm 34:18 that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, near being the word, not busy replacing, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been sitting with you in that kitchen every morning while you pulled out three chairs and left the fourth one where she put it.

What the verse actually promises

I am going to read you the line, and then I am going to tell you what it does not say, because loose quoting is how the damage gets in.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18

Two halves. He is near to the brokenhearted. He saves the crushed in spirit. Look for the replacement clause. It is not there. Nobody in that verse gets handed a new one of anything. The brokenhearted stay brokenhearted long enough for God to be described as near them, which means the nearness is not a reward for finishing grief. It is what He does while grief is still going on.

And the second half is stronger than English usually carries. The word behind crushed is the word for something ground down to powder, the way grain goes under a stone. That is not a bruise. And the verse does not say He mends the powder back into grain. It says He saves the crushed. He goes to where a person has been ground down and He does the saving there, in that condition, without waiting for the condition to improve first.

You are the one that verse is about, right now, in the condition you are actually in. I am not being warm at you: Psalm 34:18 puts God's nearness on the side of the brokenhearted specifically, and it is the same Spirit who moved David to write it who has been in your kitchen at the hour when you pull the chairs out.

And I will not say a word against the woman with the soup. She is not the problem. People who love you reach for the biggest promise they know, and restoration is the biggest one there is, and they hand it to you the way you would hand somebody a coat. She has no other word for it. Be gentle with her. She stayed in the hospital room.

Restored and replaced are not the same word

Here is the thing this whole site stands on, and I am not going to soften it in the last paragraph either.

Restored does not mean replaced. A replacement is a swap: the old one out, an equivalent one in, the ledger even, nothing owed. That is what a company does with a part. God does not do that with people, because a person is not a part, and a marriage of thirty eight years is not a vacancy. Nobody sits there. That may stay true for the rest of your life and it would not make God any less faithful, because He never signed up to the swap in the first place.

Restore is the older, deeper thing. It means He puts back into a man what was taken out of him. Not the woman. The man. The appetite for a Saturday. The nerve to say a true sentence at coffee hour. The ability to hear a hymn all the way through. That is what is on the table, and it is not a consolation prize handed over because the real thing was unavailable. It is the real thing. Replacement would have left you the same man with a different woman in the chair. This leaves the chair alone and works on the man.

You have a God who is restoring the person and not filling a seat. That is Psalm 34:18 read straight, where the saving lands on the crushed one and not on the circumstance around him, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that work at His own pace, whether or not one single thing at that table ever changes.

I am not going to tell you the chair gets filled. I am not going to tell you it does not. I do not know, and anybody who does tell you is guessing in a confident voice. What I know is what is written.

The breakthrough

So here is what is meant to happen at that table, and it is not that anybody talks you into the choir.

You are going to say two true sentences out loud, in order, and let them be two and not one. First, what is not coming back. Say it plainly, by name, without the softening clause you have been putting on the end of it in company. Then a breath. Then the second sentence: what is being restored in you. Not what you hope for. What is actually happening, however small, even if the whole of it is that you got the chairs out this morning.

The two sentences have to stay separate, because the moment they run together, one of them starts paying for the other, and that is the swap all over again.

You are holding both of those true at once, and that is not confusion, that is accuracy. Psalm 34:18 holds them both in one line, the brokenhearted and the saving, in that order, without one canceling the other, and it is the Spirit of God who gives an honest man the nerve to say the first sentence before he says the second.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these with the chair in the room. The right to say them is not something a good marriage earned you and not something grief disqualifies you from; it is yours in Christ, delegated, exercised in His name. Scripture is under every line and the Holy Spirit carries it. Nothing here promises you a filled chair and nothing here dates anything. Whatever He does with the years ahead is His to decide, and I leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Chair that nobody sits in, you do not have to be filled before I can be restored. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, it is written in Psalm 34:18, and nearness is what I have and it is not a consolation prize.
  2. Suspicion that I am the one He skipped, you have no right to stay in this kitchen. The woman I buried is not a vacancy, and God saves the crushed in spirit right in the condition I am actually in, so in the name of Jesus I am putting you out the back door.
  3. Lord, You are near to me and not to some tidier version of me that has moved on, and I am telling You the truth about that chair instead of straightening it up first. I thank You that Your word says You save the crushed and that Your Spirit is doing it in me while the chair stays exactly where she left it.
