Years RestoredPsalm 90:15

The Braids Somebody Else Did

This message is for to name the seven school years a chronic illness took, the ones where another mother did your daughter's braids and your daughter learned not to ask, and hand them over by their dates

The gate opens at ten past three, and the noise arrives before the children do.

She has learned the sound that hinge makes, which is a thing you only learn by standing here, and for seven school years she did not stand here. Three in the afternoon was the hour she was flattest. The hinge was somebody else's information.

She is here now. She stands where the shade of the wall ends, because full sun still tips her sideways if she takes it straight on, and she watches the other mothers do what mothers do at a gate. Half a conversation about a birthday party. A stroller rocked with one foot. A phone held out to show a photograph, four heads leaning in. She knows three names out of thirty. They have known each other since kindergarten.

Her daughter comes out fourth, backpack hanging off one shoulder, and her hair is in two French braids, tight and even the whole way down, the ends bound with small clear elastics.

She did not do them.

Denise did them, at Denise's kitchen counter, at twenty past seven in the morning, the way Denise has done them most school mornings since the fall everything went sideways. Denise is kind. Denise has never once made it a favor. That is not the part that sits in her chest at the gate.

The part that sits in her chest is a Tuesday four years ago, when she was upright for once and sitting on the end of the bed with the brush already in her hand, and her daughter said, it is okay, Denise will do it. Not cold. Not angry. Practical, the way an eight year old is practical when she has already run the numbers. Somewhere in the middle of those seven years the kid had worked out that asking cost her mother something. So she stopped asking. Nobody decided it. It settled the way dust settles, and by the time anyone noticed, it had been true a long while.

Seven school years. First grade through seventh. She could tell you the exact fall it started and the exact spring she was well enough to stand at a gate again, and she has never said either date out loud to another person, because saying them makes them countable, and countable makes them gone.

She did not get a vote. That is the piece she cannot put down. Nobody sat her down and asked whether she would trade seven years of braids and cereal bowls and walking to school in the rain for seven years of a ceiling. Something took them. She was in the room the entire time and she was not consulted once.

You have your own gate and your own count. Maybe it is braids, and maybe it is birthdays watched from a doorway, or a decade a marriage ate on somebody else's decisions, or a whole childhood an institution swallowed while adults filled out forms. You know your dates. You could say them faster than your own phone number, and you have never once said them out loud. You are not the only one who has been keeping that count. It is written in Psalm 56:8 that He puts your tears in His bottle and writes them in His book, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping the tally beside you through every year you thought you were counting alone.

Moses prayed with the count still in it

There is a prayer in the Psalms that nobody reads at weddings, and it belongs to you today.

Psalm 90 carries a title: a prayer of Moses, the man of God. And the man is doing arithmetic in it. He counts the length of a life, seventy years, eighty if there is strength for it. He counts how fast it goes. And then, right in the middle of the counting, he asks God for something that only makes sense if God is counting too.

Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.Psalm 90:15

Read the shape of that. He does not ask to stop counting. He does not ask to be talked out of the number, or to be told the years were secretly fine, or to be handed a lesson that makes the arithmetic go away. He brings the number. He asks for gladness measured against the exact size of the affliction, and God did not edit the prayer down before He kept it. It went into the book with the count in it, and people who had lost far more than Moses sang it for centuries afterward.

So your anger is not being corrected here. Not by me and not by this page. Anger at seven years you did not agree to is not a spiritual problem to be cleared up before God will talk to you. It is the raw material of a psalm.

You have permission, in writing, to bring the years to God with the numbers still attached. That permission is Psalm 90:15 and not my kindness, and it is the Holy Spirit who moved a man to pray it that way in the first place, which means the Spirit who is with you now is not embarrassed by your count and is not waiting for you to soften it.

Restored is not the same word as replaced

Joel says it in one line, and I want to hand it to you exactly as it stands, because loose quoting is where the damage gets in: I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent among you.

People hear that and their minds go to rewind. A calendar running backward. Seven mornings handed back over a counter like a coat you checked.

That is not what the word does, and I am not going to pretend otherwise to make this paragraph land softer. Your daughter is not going back to eight. Those mornings happened, and they were good mornings, and Denise did the braids in them, and there is no version of restoration in which somebody puts them in a box and hands the box to you.

Restored is not replaced. Replaced hands you back the thing and leaves you the same woman who lost it. Restored puts back into the person what was taken out of the person. Peter says it in the plainest sentence in the New Testament for people like you: the God of all grace will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you (1 Peter 5:10). Not the situation. You. Personally, by Him, and not through a change of circumstance you have been waiting on.

You are the one being restored, and you are not being handed a copy of the years. That is the written word in 1 Peter 5:10 and not my paraphrase of it, and it is the Holy Spirit doing the restoring, in the woman standing at the gate, at His pace, whether or not one single morning outside her ever changes.

And hear what Joel is not saying to you. He was speaking to a nation about a swarm, in a specific hour, and nothing on this page says God sent your illness, and nothing on this page puts a date on anything at all. What is being read to you is what God does with eaten years. He does not round them down.

The breakthrough

So here is what is meant to happen at that gate, and it is not that somebody gives you the mornings.

You are going to say the years. Out loud, by their dates, from the first to the last, once, the whole count. Not to a doctor and not on a form. To God, who kept a man's count inside a psalm and never asked him to shrink it. And then you are going to hand them over in one sentence, not because handing them over buys anything back and not because it settles the grief, but because they were never yours to carry by yourself, and the God of all grace is the one who restores the person the years were taken from.

You have that in writing, in Psalm 90:15 and in 1 Peter 5:10, and it does not depend on a single morning returning. The Holy Spirit is the one who opens a hand that has been closed for seven years, and He does not hurry a hand like that.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, with the count still in the room. You are in Christ, and the authority to say what is true over your own years was given to you by Him and was never earned by surviving them. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, and the words are not stronger for being said louder. Speak to the years, in the name of Jesus, and leave what He does with the shape of what is ahead where it belongs. His timing is His own, the outcome is His, and nothing here dates anything or promises you one morning back. What is promised is the person, restored, and that was written down long before you got sick.

  1. Two French braids somebody else did, you do not get the last word over these seven school years. Psalm 90:15 is a prayer God kept with the count still in it, so I am bringing my dates to Him and not burying them. The years are named and they are handed over.
  2. Verdict that says my daughter replaced me, you are not the truth about this house. Restored is not replaced and I am not asking for a copy of those mornings, and it is written that the God of all grace restores the person, so in the name of Jesus I say plainly who the person is: me.
  3. Father, You kept a man's count inside Psalm 90 and You are keeping mine, and I am saying my dates out loud to You instead of holding them alone. I thank You that You are restoring the woman those school years were taken from, at Your pace and not mine. My hands are open and the count is in Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
