Years RestoredPsalm 126:5

Ten Years of Waiting Rooms

This message is for to name the ten years an immigration process took from a family, counted by a night nurse in the waiting rooms of a whole decade, and hand them over by their dates

The break room smells like burnt coffee and the inside of a microwave, and at ten past seven in the morning it belongs to whoever is too tired to leave. Marisol has the corner chair, the one with the split vinyl, and she has her shoes off. Twelve hours. Two admissions, one code, and a man in 412 who wanted to talk about his fishing boat until the sun came up. She let him. He was frightened, and the boat was easier.

Her bag is on the table. Inside the bag is a folder, and it is not a nurse's folder. It is soft at the corners from being carried. It holds a case number, seven receipts, a biometrics appointment card, three letters that say the same thing in different fonts, and the photograph they took of her mother at the consulate, which is ten years old now and looks it.

Ten years. She has done the arithmetic so many times it does not even count as thinking anymore. Her son was six. Her son shaves now. Her mother has had three birthdays watched through a phone propped against a sugar bowl and two she missed altogether because the shift could not be traded. There was a Christmas she worked so she could pay a filing fee. There was one spring when nothing happened at all, no letter, no call, no movement, an entire spring, and somehow that is the one that sits heaviest.

She has spent the decade in waiting rooms. The federal building, where the chairs are bolted to the floor. The attorney's office, with the fish tank and the magazines from another year. And these, the ones she is paid to walk through, where other people's families sit at three in the morning under a television nobody is watching. She has become an expert in a room where nothing can be done and everything is at stake. She knows what the light looks like in one at four in the morning. She knows which vending machine takes a crumpled bill.

She does not cry in the break room. She is not the crying kind, and besides, there is a resident asleep on the other sofa. What she does is put her hand flat on top of the folder, the way you would on a coffin or a Bible, and think the sentence she never says out loud. That was my life, and something else was using it.

If you have a folder like that, in a bag or a drawer or a plastic tote under the stairs, then this message is not about her. You are carrying years that were taken and not spent, and it is written in Psalm 126:5 that what goes into the ground in tears is sown and not spilled, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping the count beside you in every one of those rooms.

The word the psalm uses is not wasted

There is a psalm about people coming back from a long captivity, and it does not open with fireworks. It opens with the memory of the crying. Then it says a thing so short that it is easy to walk past:

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.Psalm 126:5

Sit on the verb. Sowing is not a farming word for productivity. Sowing is a burial word. You take something valuable, you put it into the dark where you cannot see it, you walk away from it, and for a long stretch there is nothing to look at but dirt. Anybody watching from the road would say the farmer had thrown good food into the ground for no reason at all.

The psalm does not call those tears a mistake. It does not call them a lapse, or a failure of faith, or a season you should have handled better. It calls them seed. That is agricultural language for something placed deliberately, by someone who intends a harvest, into the one place where nothing appears to be happening.

You are not a person who broke down in a hallway and lost ten years to it. You are a person whose tears were sown, and Psalm 126:5 says so in words older than your case number, and the same Spirit who moved on the face of the deep has been moving over that hidden ground the entire time.

That is the first correction, and it goes underneath everything else in this message. The years in your folder were not idle. You were not standing still. You were in the dark part of a process, and the dark part is a real part.

Restored is not the same word as replaced

Here is the promise this whole site is built on, and I want to hand it to you exactly as it is written, without a single word added to it.

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.Joel 2:25

Now let me teach you the difference between two words, because your peace depends on it and almost nobody makes the distinction out loud.

To replace is to put a second object where the first one stood. A new phone, a new car, another dog. The replacement is not the thing you lost. It is a different thing occupying the same slot, and everybody quietly agrees to stop mentioning the original.

To restore is something else entirely. Restoration is what you do to a house, a painting, a torn page, a person. It means the original is brought back to its right condition and handed back to its rightful owner. It never pretends the damage did not occur. A restored thing still carries its history, and that is precisely why it is restoration and not manufacture.

So hear this carefully, because I am not going to soften it. A decade cannot be reissued. Nobody hands you a year back across a counter. Your son is not six anymore and no promise in this text is going to make him six. If somebody has told you that God is preparing to return the exact ten years to you, they were being kind and they were not being accurate, and you already knew that, which is part of why the kindness landed so strangely.

What Joel says is that God restores. Not that God duplicates. And He addresses that word to what the locust ate, which means He has already looked directly at the loss and called it loss. He did not tell them the locust years were secretly fine.

You have a God who has already looked at what was eaten and named it out loud, and it is written in Joel 2:25 that He calls it eaten before He says anything else about it, and it is the Holy Spirit inside you who refuses to let that verse be turned into a slogan over your life.

I am not telling you what He is going to hand back. I am not telling you when. Joel was spoken to a nation about a locust year, and I will not aim it like an arrow at your particular file, because that would be me making you a promise out of somebody else's mail. What I will tell you is this. Those years are held. They are not written off. They sit on a ledger that is not yours to keep.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is smaller and more possible than you think.

An unnamed loss gets carried as a mood. It follows you into the parking lot and into your marriage and into the way you answer the phone, and you cannot put it down, because you have never once said what it is. A named loss can be handed to somebody. That is the whole mechanism.

So we are going to name the years. Not summarize them. Not call them a hard season. Name them, one at a time, by their dates, out loud, in your own voice, in a room where you are alone or with one person who is safe.

This is not a performance of grief and it is not a request for a timeline. You are not asking God to explain the delay. You are doing what a person does at the end of a long shift, which is to give the report and then hand over custody of everything on it.

You are permitted to say the whole count out loud without one word of apology for how it sounds, because He promised in Psalm 56:8 that He puts your tears in His bottle and writes them in His book, and the Holy Spirit is the One who has kept that record open beside you the entire decade.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Folder of case numbers, you do not get the last word over what those years were. Psalm 126:5 says the tears were sown and not spilled, and I am handing the count to the God who reaps. In the name of Jesus I take my hands off it and put it in His.
  2. Voice that calls the decade wasted, you are not the one who keeps my record. It is written in Psalm 56:8 that He puts my tears in His bottle, and His Spirit has been counting beside me in every room I sat in. I am a woman whose years were sown.
  3. Lord, You are the God who reaps what was sown in tears, and I am giving You the years by their dates. Your word in Joel 2:25 says You restore what the locust ate, and I leave the how and the when with You. My hands are off the folder and my shoes are off in Your house.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
