The parallel bars are eight feet long and he knows every inch of them by the feel of the aluminum under his palms, the sticky patch two thirds of the way down where somebody's tape residue never came off.
At the far end there is a mirror. He has opinions about the mirror.
Priya is on one knee beside him with the goniometer, doing the thing with his knee that she does at the end of every quarter, and she is quiet in the way she gets when she is concentrating, and then she writes in the spiral notebook with his name on the tab and says, in a completely even voice: four millimeters better than March.
Four millimeters.
He says thank you, because Priya is excellent and Priya has not lied to him once in four years, and because it is not her fault that four millimeters is a distance you could hide under a fingernail.
Four years. That is the number that actually lives in his chest. Four years of a blue mat and alcohol wipes and a parking lot he can now cross in under six minutes. Four years of home program printouts in a folder. Four years of people asking how it is going and him saying, slowly, and watching their faces do the small polite thing that faces do.
And here is what nobody prepares you for. He cannot feel it. Not the improvement. He can feel the effort, every ounce of it, and he can feel the days after. But the getting better is happening somewhere below the floor of what his body reports to him, and it has been happening down there for four years, and the only proof that it is happening at all is a number in somebody else's handwriting in somebody else's notebook.
That is the part that gets him in the car afterward. Not the slowness. The fact that his own evidence is not his. He has to be told. Every three months a woman with a goniometer tells him whether his own body moved, and he believes her, and he has no independent way to know.
Somebody used the word plateau in year two. Just once, in passing, not even about him exactly. He has thought about that word roughly every week since.
You know this room even if you have never been in it. Maybe it is a knee, and maybe it is a mind, a marriage in counseling, a child coming back from something, a debt of energy you have been paying down for years with nothing you can point at. You are doing the work. You cannot feel the work working. And the only evidence you get is handed to you by somebody else, on their schedule, in their handwriting. You are being held inside a timetable that is not indifferent to you. It is written in Psalm 31:15 that your times are in His hand, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been at work in the four years underneath what your body reports, in the exact place where your own instruments cannot reach.
The healing that came in two stages
There is a healing in Mark's Gospel that people skip past, and it is skipped for the same reason it is in there: it is awkward.
Bethsaida. They bring a blind man to Jesus. And Jesus does something He does not do anywhere else. He takes the man by the hand and leads him out of the village first, away from the crowd and the audience and the people who would have had opinions. Then He spits on his eyes and lays hands on him and asks him a question: do you see anything?
And the man says the strangest sentence in the Gospels.
And he looked up and said, "I see people, but they look like trees, walking."Mark 8:24
Sit in that for a second. That is not healed. That is not unhealed either. That is a man with something genuinely happening in his eyes and no way to describe it except by saying it is not finished, out loud, to the face of Jesus.
And nothing goes wrong. Nobody is embarrassed. Jesus does not treat the half sight as a failure in the man, does not ask him whether he really believed, does not send him away to work on something. Mark keeps the man's sentence word for word, which means the church has had it in front of it for two thousand years: partial is in the Bible, described honestly, in the presence of Christ, and it is not shameful.
You are inside a work that is genuinely underway and genuinely unfinished, and those are not opposites. Mark 8:24 puts a half healed man in front of Jesus with no rebuke anywhere in the passage, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying out the part of this you cannot feel, in the years where the only word you had for it was trees.
He laid His hands on him again
Then comes the next verse, and it is one sentence, and I want you to notice whose move it is.
Then He laid His hands on his eyes again, and the man saw everything clearly (Mark 8:25).
The second touch was Jesus's initiative. The man did not have to ask better. He did not have to produce more faith, or apologize for the trees, or figure out what he had done wrong in stage one. He told the truth about where he was, and the hands came back.
That matters here more than anything, because you have almost certainly been handed the opposite. Somebody has implied, gently or not, that a recovery this slow says something about you. It does not. Nothing in Mark 8 makes the pace the man's responsibility, and nothing in this article will either. You are not the reason for the four millimeters, and you could not have made it eight by wanting it more.
And I am not going to tell you it is about to speed up. I have no way of knowing that and neither does anyone who has said it to you at church. Nothing here dates anything.
But hear this, because it is the actual point of the category: slow is not stalled. Those are two entirely different states and only one of them is yours. The four millimeters were real. They happened in a body, in real time, over ninety days, whether or not a single one of them ever reached the part of you that notices things. Not feeling it is not evidence. It never was.
And restored is not the same word as replaced. Replaced would hand you back the body you had at the start of this, the one that walked without thinking. Restored puts back into the person what was taken out of the person, and Peter says the God of all grace will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you (1 Peter 5:10), all four of those verbs aimed straight at you and not at your range of motion.
You have a work going on in you that does not depend on your ability to detect it. Mark 8:25 says the hands came back on His initiative rather than on the man's performance, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps the work moving in the dark under the floorboards where nobody, including you, is standing with a goniometer.
So here is what is meant to happen in the car in the parking lot after Priya writes the number down, and it is not that you talk yourself into feeling something.
It is that you let the four millimeters be evidence instead of an insult.
They are not a consolation and they are not a joke. They are a record of something that actually happened in your actual body during ninety days when your own instruments read nothing. Somebody else's notebook is not a demotion. It is a witness. The blind man could not verify his own eyes either. He told the truth about what he could see and Someone else did the assessing, and that arrangement was not a failure of the man.
You are permitted to say out loud that it looks like trees, and nothing bad happens when you do. That is Mark 8:24 in the written word, said in front of Jesus with no correction offered, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an honest sentence about a slow year an act of faith rather than a complaint.
Declare this over yourself
Now speak, before you start the engine. You are in Christ, and the standing to say what is true about your own body was given to you by Him and never had to be earned with a better number. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it. Speak to the plateau and to the word somebody used in year two, in the name of Jesus, and bless Priya and everyone else who has kept the record you cannot keep. Keep going to your appointments and keep doing the program in the folder; nothing here replaces the care that has been put in your hands. What He does about the pace is His to decide, His timing is His own, and nothing here dates anything or predicts one millimeter. What is promised is the person, restored, and your times are already in His hand.
- Four millimeters in somebody else's notebook, you are not the whole record and you are not an insult. Psalm 31:15 says my times are in His hand, and the hand holding them is steadier than the feeling in mine. Those millimeters happened whether or not I felt one of them.
- Label that says I stopped improving, you are not the truth about my body. Scripture keeps a man saying he saw people like trees, in front of Jesus, with no rebuke anywhere in the passage, so in the name of Jesus I say the honest thing out loud too: this is slow, and slow is not stalled, and I am still under His hands.
- Father, You laid Your hands on that man a second time and he never had to ask You better, and I am resting on that tonight. I thank You that the work in me is going on underneath what my body reports to me, at Your pace and not mine. I am naming one small true thing out loud today and I am leaving the rest of the record with You.
