She takes the long way to town now, which adds nine minutes, and she has never once explained to anybody why.
The short way goes past the home place. There is a curve about a quarter mile before it where the road drops and the fence line starts, and she used to be able to tell how the corn was doing from that curve without slowing down. She still slows down. She cannot help it. Her foot comes off the gas at the same spot it has come off the gas since she was seventeen with a learner's permit and her daddy in the passenger seat telling her the curve was sharper than it looked.
The mailbox is new. Black, on a cedar post set in concrete, and it says a name that is not her name. Somebody has painted it on by hand, neatly, the way you do when you are proud of a thing. There is a plastic sled leaned against the post, from last winter, that nobody has put away.
They have put a new roof on the barn. It is the wrong color metal. Not wrong for them, wrong for her, and she knows the difference, and it does not help. The maple by the smokehouse is gone, and there is a swing set where it stood, and two children are on it right now, and they are laughing, and she does not begrudge them one second of it. That is what she would want to say to somebody if there were anybody to say it to. I do not want them off it. I want it not to have happened.
She sits at the end of the lane with the engine running. There is a coffee cup in the holder gone cold. She does not turn in. She has never turned in.
And on Sunday a woman she has known for thirty years took both her hands in the church parking lot and said, with her whole heart, honey, God is going to give that land back to you. I feel it. And she said thank you, because what else do you say, and she got in her car, and she cried the whole way home, and not one tear of it was gratitude.
You have your own curve where your foot comes off the gas. Maybe it is a house, maybe it is a shop with your father's name still ghosted on the brick, maybe it is a stretch of a county road, maybe it is a phone number you have not dialed in nine years but could dial in the dark. And you have your own parking lot, and somebody in it who loves you, who meant every word, and who put a promise in your hands that neither of you can cash. You are carrying two things at once, a real loss and a real love, and you are not being asked to throw either one away to keep the other. It is written in Hebrews 11:16 that God is not ashamed to be called the God of people who died without ever holding what was promised, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been sitting in that idling truck with you at the end of that lane, every single time, and He has never once told you to get over it.
What she meant in that parking lot
Start here, because we are not going to be clever about that woman.
She was reaching for something real. There is a promise in Joel about years the locusts ate. There is a whole book where a man loses everything and ends with more than he started with. She has read them and she believes them and she loves you, and standing in a parking lot with your hands in hers she reached for the biggest thing she could think of and handed it to you. That is not foolishness. That is a person who could not stand your loss and did the only thing she had.
Here is the trouble, and it is not her heart, it is the shape of the sentence. What she handed you makes God's faithfulness depend on a deed transfer. It puts His honor on the county clerk's shelf. And it means every year that goes by with that name on that mailbox is another year of quiet evidence, piling up where you cannot see it but can feel it, that either she was wrong or He is not who she said He is.
I am not going to add to that pile. I am not going to tell you the land comes back. Nobody on this page knows that, and a person who says it does not know it either.
But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.Hebrews 11:16
Look at who that verse is about. It is about people who died holding a deed to nothing. Abraham lived in a tent his whole life in the country he was promised and the only piece of ground he ever owned in it was a burial cave he paid cash for. He did not get the land. And the Holy Spirit, writing through the man who wrote Hebrews, does not spend one word apologizing for that or explaining it away.
You are standing in a line of people God was not ashamed of, and not one of them held the thing. That is written in Hebrews 11:16, in that exact order, the not being ashamed and the city already prepared, and it is the same Spirit who put those names in that chapter who has your name and your curve in the road and the whole nine minutes you drive around it.
Restoring is not a title search
Now say the honest thing all the way out, and then we will go on.
Restored and returned are two different words, and this site is not going to blur them for your comfort. Returned means the mailbox says your name again. Restored means the person driving past it is being put back together. Those are not the same work, they do not run on the same schedule, and only one of them is promised to you here.
And I want to be careful with Hebrews, because there is a cheap way to use it and I am not going to use it that way. That verse is not saying your loss does not matter because heaven is coming. It is not a hand over your mouth. Read it again. It says God is not ashamed. Shame is the word, and shame is what you feel at the end of that lane, the low hum that says a family that could not hold its own ground is a family that failed, and that you are the one it failed under.
You have God's own testimony that He is not embarrassed to be called your God, and it is written in that verse before the city is ever mentioned. He said it about people whose whole inheritance was a promise and a burial cave, and it is the Holy Spirit who is saying it in the present tense over a woman with a cold coffee cup and the engine running.
And the anger, if that is what is in you, stays. Anger at what was taken is not a flaw in your faith and it is not something you owe anybody an apology for. Nobody here is going to ask you to feel differently about that barn roof before God is allowed to do anything in you.
So here is what is meant to happen, and it is not a hint about that mailbox.
You are going to separate the two sentences that have been jammed together in your chest since that parking lot. They have been fused for so long that you cannot say one without the other coming with it, and fused is why you have been driving nine minutes out of your way to avoid a curve.
Sentence one is what is not coming back. Say it plain. No softening, no maybe, no wording that leaves a door open. Sentence two, said separately, after a breath, is one thing God is restoring in you right now, and it does not have to be impressive and it will not be a farm. It might be that you can hear the word home again without your jaw setting.
You have the standing to say both of those out loud, because the first one is honest and the second one is written. Hebrews 11:16 gives you a God who is not ashamed of a person holding a promise and no property, and the Holy Spirit is the one who will not let those two sentences stay welded together in a woman who has needed them apart for years.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these where you can hear yourself. You are in Christ, and the authority under these words is His and delegated to you, not something you have to be brave enough to deserve. Scripture is the ground under every one of them and the Holy Spirit carries them, and none of this is a technique. Nothing here promises the land, nothing here sets a date, and nothing here corrects what you feel about that barn roof. His timing is His own, and whatever He does with the shape of the years ahead is His to decide.
- Mailbox with another name on it, you do not get to tell me who God is. Hebrews 11:16 says He is not ashamed to be called their God and that He has a city prepared, and that stands whether or not I ever turn up that lane again.
- Shame that says my family failed under me, you are not the truth about me. It is written that God is unashamed to be called the God of people who held nothing, and in the name of Jesus I hand you back the verdict you have been keeping on me.
- Lord, I am not going to pretend that ground is coming back, and I am not asking You to be a God who owes me acreage. I thank You that Your word calls You unashamed of me and that Your Spirit is restoring the woman who drives past that curve. I am saying both sentences out loud today, and I am leaving the rest with You.
